Movie Reviews of Blackbeard's GhostMovie Review: Bad, Bad Pirate! Summary: 1 Stars
I just received this disc and was waiting in excitement to see this childhood favorite again, but since ordering it and it arriving this morning I have heard the worst reviews and negative comments about the picture quality.Okay, so we're not expecting a 2-disc 5.1 sound spruced up version, but at the very least a film that's so obviously framed at either 1.66:1 or 1.85:1 should get converted at the right aspect ratio. I'd even be happy if they still used the rubbish print, as long as it was OAR. On the back packaging they don't even print the "this film has been modified to fit your screen" blurb! Fine, if they want to put out "open matte" films in fullscreen, then go ahead (we can always re-frame it on out widescreen TVs!), but put a widescreen title out in widescreen for pete's sake. It's a shame Disney have done this as every other release so far has been a prime example of how discs should be produced! The one star is only as you can't select NO STARS! I've not opened this yet, and am seriously considering sending it back. Bad. Don't buy it.
Movie Review: Disney shipwrecks this pirate. Summary: 1 Stars
I am so disappointed. I have crystal childhood memories of sitting in a darkened theater as the tale of Blackbeard's Ghost was told. All the silliness and charm of Peter Ustinov, Dean Jones, and the wonderful Suzanne Pleshette are present in this release on DVD, but sadly, Disney has really screwed up on this one. Not only is the film not offered in it's widescreen format, nor are there any interesting extras on the disc (not even the trailer!) but absolutely NO care has been taken in transferring the film to DVD. The picture quality is mediocre at best, with obvious scratches and even frequent instances when a peculiar purple haze passes over the screen. Disney should be embarrassed. Rent it - don't buy it.
Movie Review: Blackbeard's Ghost Summary: 1 Stars
Though I think this is a fun movie, I was shocked at the terrible quality of both the audio and video. Disney should be ashamed to have released anything this bad.
A similar Disney movie with Dean Jones and Suzanne Pleshette, "The Ugly Dachshund", was released on a DVD with excellent quality.
It's almost as if some Disney executive wanted to save production costs by issuing a few cheap editions, hoping we would by them after being baited by the nice ones. I fell for it, and I regret it.
I won't purchase any more Disney DVD's in full-screen. I'll wait for widescreen, remastered.
Movie Review: I've waited years, now I have to wait even longer... Summary: 1 Stars
Very excited about the possiblilty of purchasing this childhood favorite, however after reading the reviews of the poor quality (GRAINY?..AND WHAT..NO LETTERBOX???) I will wait until Disney decides not to trash one of their better late 1960's movies. I have come to expect poor quality DVD's from no-frills cheaper ... DVD and VHS titles, however never would have expected Disney to resort to this type of poor quality merchandising. As Mel Brooks' "Yogurt" character from Spaceballs said "Merchandising...where the real money from the movie is made..." Surely a good quality transfer onto DVD contitutes good merchandising?
Movie Review: A Disney Favorite Compromised Summary: 1 Stars
While we were thrilled to see that one of our favorite Disney comedies was scheduled for DVD release, we were dismayed by Disney's refusal to treat its films (and its fans) with respect. Why aren't Disney DVD's released in their original theatrical ratios? The new "Vault Disney" titles are simply wonderful, and while we agree that this title might not merit an elobrate release of that nature, it does deserve to be seen in widescreen. Disney could simply release both versions on the same disc and please everyone. We won't buy this DVD until it is released in widescreen.
