Movie Reviews of Black Cat: Box Set

Movie Review: this one lands on its feet
Summary: 5 Stars

The series starts off with loads of action and is basically revolving around main character, Train and his exploits with the Chronos organization that he works for. Throw in a couple characters (Sven, Renslet) that he comes to know and care for and an additional one that he likes but not really in that way. Things only get that much more interesting. It's great to see Funimation and Gonzo come up with this excellent anime series.

Also of note is the character Eve as she is central to this story and comes into their lives after an accident happens. She grows to be a major addition to this cast of ecentric characters that also include other sweepers and numbers (numbered characters of the Chronos organization that Train is a part of).

Great start, middle and ending as well. It really makes for an all around, well rounded, hilarious yet touching series that should be watched as soon as you have the chance.

Summary of Black Cat: Box Set

Sven is your run-of-the-mill sweeper (a.k.a. bounty hunter) - down on his luck, haunted by the perpetual grumbling of his stomach and looking to make enough cash just to get by. When a damsel in distress enlists his aid, Sven crosses paths with the worst possible luck - Black Cat (a.k.a. Train Heartnet). At odds now with the branded assassin, Sven seeks to save a young girl before the unlucky Number can carry out his mission.

But fate has brought these three together for a reason, as Sven adopts two stray pupils - The former Chronos eraser Train and the young bio-weapon Eve. As these newfound companions seek out a new way of life, the past proves unwilling to let them go free. Sought by both the Chronos Numbers and the Taoist revolutionary group risen against them, the Apostles of the Star, their happy ending will require more than just luck.

Black Cat (2005) brings together a trio of unlikely characters in an off-beat sci-fi comedy-adventure. Train Heartnet, The Black Cat, uses his superhuman speed and marksmanship as an assassin for the sinister cabal Chronos. Sven Vollfied, a perennially broke "Sweeper" or bounty hunter, talks his way into and out of adventures. This improbable duo collides when Sven tries to rescue Train's next target: Eve, a little girl who's been turned into a killing machine through illicit nanotechnology. A mixture of naivet? and murderous transformations, she's another example of the deadly moppets in recent anime. The story initially focuses on Train and his decision to live his own life, rather than continue as a deadly puppet for Chronos. But the subplots proliferate, climaxing in a baroque scheme that pits Sven, Train, Eve, and their friends against a power-hungry gang armed with nanotechnology and Tao superpowers. Director Shin Itagaki uses fast cutting, unusual colors, and interesting camera angles skillfully: he keeps the story moving, even when it doesn't make sense. Like Lost Universe, Black Cat shifts jarringly in tone from comic to heartwarming to dramatic. Voice actors Brandon Potter and Jason Liebrecht make Sven and Train an appropriately quarrelsome pair of buddies, but their voices sound too old for the characters, who look much younger than the designs inKentaro Yabuki's original manga. The 24 episodes in this set could have easily fit on four discs. Rated TV PG, suitable for ages 14 and older: violence, violence against women, brief nudity, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon
