Movie Reviews of Birthday GirlMovie Review: First-rate! Summary: 5 Stars
Here is a film that is well-conceived and well-executed. And, even better, Nicole Kidman turns in a fine hard/soft performance. Paired with Ben Chapman, the lacklustre bank employee who orders a Russian bride, Kidman is terrific as the non-English-speaking female who arrives at Heathrow to meet her future husband. Chapman is the perfect foil; the two play off each other in wonderful fashion. Both characters turn out to have more substance than it seems initially, and there are funny moments as well as surprisingly touching ones. Kidman's Russian and her accent are delivered very naturally with none of that Meryl Streepish showiness that invariably made the viewer overly aware of how effectively (or not) she'd done her homework. This is a rewarding film, not only because the script is good but also because of a fine cast--particularly Kidman's two Russian "friends" who arrive on her birthday and set some mad events in motion.Worth noting: Kidman's wardrobe is just terrific--a fabulously conceived rendering of Russian punk-chic. Big points to the costume designer. Highly recommended.
Movie Review: A criminally overlooked challenging film Summary: 5 Stars
Birthday Girl might be the best movie ever to have receive such mediocre reviews by film-critics . Having been delayed to come out at theatres for more than a year , the film was poorly promoted which resulted in almost zero box office profits . The story about a moderate , calm banker who deceides to order a bride via internet is sharp , smart and full of black humour . The biggest plus of Birthday Girl is it's sly , witty script and it's terrific lead-actors . Kidman is particularly convincing as the slick , russian bride who has secrets of her own yet extra credit should be given to Ben Chaplin for creating such a naive , loveable central hero . He's an actor brave enough to chose to play a role so different from the hunky mr.perfects which you see on most romantic films of today . Even though his hero's character is languid , he makes him seem so great on screen by marking out his perplexity in tough situations and his weak humane side . Birthday Girl is a well-made romantic thriller with a little bit more sex , violence and brains than usual . Be wise and pick this one up right away .
Movie Review: MAKE A WISH Summary: 5 Stars
Srait-laced Englishman John (Ben Chaplin) gets more than he bargained for when a Russian mail order bride service fixes him up with Nadia (Nicole Kidman), an enigmatic beauty who speaks no English but knows other ways to get through to her man! When two of Nadia's cousins unexpectedly drop in on the couple things take a turn for the bizarre, but is it too late for John to put everything right? It's hard to talk about a mystery film's plot without being a spoiler, so let's just say this is a smart, witty and surprisingly complex story that is never what you think it is. The cover copy touts "Birthday Girl" as an intense thriller, but it's much more than that. This is really more of a drama with alternately dark, funny, and surreal undertones that always switches hats at just the right time. The dialogue is literate and true-to-life, and the acting is absolutely first-rate on the part of both leads. Clever and poignant, "Birthday Girl" is a great story of what can happen when Cupid misfires.
Movie Review: Happy Brithday? Oh yeah. Summary: 5 Stars
Birthday Girl was a great movie. I rented it after reading some reviews here and I expected it to be terrible. Though I am a huge Nicole Kidman fan so I HAD to watch it and see how it turned out. It was fantastic. There were two things I think would have been nice though. One is some extra feature or hidden bonus feature that unlocks the Russian scenes so you get subtitles and see all of what they are saying instead of just finding out what the say later in the movie. I would also like to know whether this was a dark comedy, romantic comedy, sex comedy or thriller. My opinion? Dark comedy/romantic comedy with a few hints of borderline thriller/crime movie. Totally awesome. See this movie. You'll be glad you did.
Movie Review: Outstanding Summary: 5 Stars
This was an outstanding movie, and Kidman outdid herself! When the movie was at theaters, I read mixed reviews on this one. I decided to go see it and loved it so much I bought the DVD. There are explicit sex scenes, but otherwise it is not offensive. The story is very clever, and it keeps you guessing until the very end. You can't say a lot without giving away the surprises. Kidman plays a Russian bride and she does an incredible job of speaking Russian. Her "husband" is a pathetic kind of guy, but you really feel sorry for him when the scam begins! It's a great story and I really recommend this DVD!
