Movie Review: Biography: Charles Dickens

I enjoy this television series on A&E. Certain people, I purchase the DVD. I have taped some programs off-air, but not this person. I have to admit, I knew very little about Charles Dickens before viewing this recording. I have only read a couple of his works, and one - "A Christmas Carol" is "standard fare" for Christmas TV viewing. I have a couple of different casts performing this piece on DVD in my library. I am glad I purchased this recording & viewed it. I feel like I know Charles Dickens a little better than I did before.

The story of how a boy from a family mired in debt went on to become the foremost public celebrity of the 19th century is vividly told in this installment from the A&E Biography series. After being put to work in a factory as a child, Charles Dickens obsessively chased literary success, submitting his sketches of London life to newspapers and striving mightily to publish his great serialized novels. Experts on Dickens offer telling anecdotes about his family, his tortured romantic life, and his prodigious output of prose. His life as a public figure is also amply portrayed, with vintage illustrations and photographs showing the great novelist enjoying the role of celebrity. The video presents a balanced view of Dickens, noting that for all his genius at inventing characters, he was often lacking in his own personal relationships. As one would expect from the Biography series, the production is highly professional and intelligently delivered. It would serve as a very solid introduction to Dickens, but also features insights and visual treats that would make it interesting to those who already familiar with his life and work. --Robert J.
