Movie Reviews of Big EdenMovie Review: LIFE AFIRMING OLD FASHIONED LUV-Story (GAY) Summary: 5 Stars
Hey! I don't usually get too involved in movies, but I Just got back from seeing one of the most LIFE AFFIRMING movies of my life... This movie is NOT appropriate for kids, but it is very heart warming for old fashionned heart warming LOVE STORY for pre-adults & adults who respect and value diversity and good values... Big Eden is told with a TWIST - a less than the usual or average-centric point of view... In BIG EDEN (a currently showing independent movie), being Gay in a small town is no big deal... And everyone's life there is as usual -- a small town that has many caring and loving people of which some just happen to have grown up "different" -- they are the Gay members of the community and they are full-valued members of the town. Yes, there is boy-boy kissing, but that is NOT the point of the movie... it is the importance of the total human experience! If you are Gay or have Gay friends then, "Big Eden" will be a joy to watch. Go see it with them or just treat yourself to a nice flic with a different twist! Anyway, If you get a chance to see "BIG EDEN" do... WOWOW! Don Hicks Los Angeles, CA
Movie Review: 'Eden' is a Slice of Heaven Summary: 5 Stars
'Big Eden' chronicles the return of a successful New York artist (Arye Gross) to his small town home in Montana to care for his ailing grandfather. The most frequent charged leveled at the film by critics is its unrealistic depiction of such a gay-friendly rural community, where it seems all the residents are bent on helping this artist find a boyfriend/significant other. I think the title says it all--you know going in that this ISN'T necessarily an accurate depiction of the liberal sensibilities of a small town; "Big Eden" is simply stating that, in a perfect world, this is how ANY town, big or small, would react--with love and support--to the return of one of its own.. If you keep this in mind while viewing it, it's a genuinely moving and funny experience. The joy comes in getting to know the denizens of Big Eden--no one is truly bad or malevolent. Occasionally misguided and overzealous, perhaps. The cast is uniformly excellent, with Gross giving an outstanding, restrained performance. The scenery is utterly astounding, as most of the picture was shot on location in Glacier National Park.
Movie Review: Big Eden should exist in Montana or any U.S. state! Summary: 5 Stars
I pulled this unknown video from a new release dvd display. Viewed last evening by a monogomous [non-traditional] couple and myself, husband/father of four, we were expecting to view an art film - "one of the most celebrated films of the year." It is rated pg-13. Big Eden includes Louise Fletcher amoung other well known and respected actors. We three were held spellbound by the characters, their delema, and the heart each townsperson reveals as they try to respect a hometown reunion of two recently returned accomplished hometown adults, yet realize there is more to their own community and personal character development then they realized. This is how small towns should react to romance when they are lucky enough to witness it happening amoungst it's eligable adults. Maybe it should be in school libraries for instructions on how to deal with homofobia and there would be fewer cases of Mathew Shepards on farm fences. Definately a film to share with your children, your church youth education board and your school board. The USA still remains the home of the free, the brave, right?
Movie Review: Big Eden = Big Love = GREAT FILM!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Big Eden is one of those "sleeper" indie films that just flies beneath the radar, but is truly an exceptional film.
It's all about love and honesty and truth - and being loved and honest and truthful - to yourself and to others...
Henry Hart (Arye Gross) returns to his small town upbringing from years as a semi-successful artist in New York, after his grandfather (George Coe) - who raised him from a wee lad - suffers a heart attack and falls off the roof of a house he built. During his grandfather's recuperation, Henry finds himself falling in love (again) with his unrequited high school crush, Dean, former football captain and best friend. Dean has come back to town after having been divorced, with his 2 young sons in tow.
The supporting cast (including Louise Fletcher and an incomparable Corinne Bohrer) is phenominal and the lessons that Big Eden teaches us - about living our lives as we should and being honest and truthful about who we are - can be life changing.
It's all about just stopping and letting ourselves be found.
Movie Review: What a great film Summary: 5 Stars
What a great film. I had not heard anything about this movie and viewed it on the off chance that it might be ok. I was pleasantly surprised. Has great characterisations (one or two maybe a bit cliched) an intelligent script, great acting, great country music and indigenous sound track, beautiful scenery and an ending that made me wish that there were places like Big Eden on our planet. The thing I liked most about the film was its centre on a sense of community - I think it is incidental that the main characters are gay as the story could have worked just as well if they were straight - a community spirit that we all seem to have lost. The other great theme is that if we let others in to our lives, regardless of who we or they are, it can be such an enriching experience. I can't number all of the great things I have gotten from this film, but must admit that I am on my own personal search for a place like Big Eden. One that values people and community and offers enrichment for everyone no matter who you are. I thoroughly recommend this movie to everyone.
