Movie Reviews of Big EdenMovie Review: A MOVIE I CAN WATCH OVER & OVER..... Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this movie about 5 years ago, and although it's not perfect, it's as close as one can get to a terrific romance-drama with some humor tossed in. Sure, Arye Gross's character can get a bit "whiney" at times, but Eric Schweig, Nan Martin, Tim DeKay,Louise Fletcher and George Coe are perfect in their respective roles. Since Nan Martin has recently passed, it's even more touching to watch now. I have seen this movie 11 times, the photography is just as perfect as that in "Brokeback Mountain", and even 'tho I am NOT a fan of country music, the soundtrack is terrific as well. I recommend this to my "choice" friends who are not touchy about a love story between 2 men, & even bought 3 copies( 1 VHS, 2DVD), so if I can share and let somone borrow a copy, & it's not returned, I still have 2 more to view. You sort of forget about prejudice in the world while watching this movie, & yet some critisize it for being unrealistic, that in the Northwest there wouldn't be anyplace that tolerant. Well I never got hung up on this movie for being unrealistic, I just enjoyed it for what it was, a fun, happy romance. If you want to see great American landscape, a "homey" atmosphere where everyone knows you & your sexual preference isn't an issue, and some wonderful performances, then this movie, you have to see.
Movie Review: One of the all time great love stories Summary: 5 Stars
If you are a movie lover,by all means put this one on your short list of films to own. Trust me, you will want to watch it again and again. Why? Well, how about great acting, inspired writing, deft direction, and absolutely gorgeous scenery. Ayre Gross and Eric Schweig make one of the sweetest couples to ever appear on screen. Both characters are complex, yet recognizable. You do literally FEEL these men, their pain, and ultimately their joy. And,believe me, getting to that joy is a delightful journey. If there was any justice in Hollywood, both of these actors would be working CONSTANTLY. There are also fine and sometimes surprising supporting performances from veterans like Louise Fletcher, Nan Martin and George Coe. We can't forget Veanne Cox, O'Neal Compton, Tim DeKay, and all the guys at the store(watch these little gems closely). Bravo to Thomas Bezucha for bring us this diamond of a film. I can't wait to see more of his stuff. Oh, and Thomas, thank you for that final kiss. Boy, I'm a sucker for high romance. To the DVD buyers out there. The extras here are really interesting. Especially the cast interviews and the "Making Of" segments. So, run, don't walk, to purchase this movie. You won't be sorry. I'm moving to Big Eden ASAP!!
Movie Review: FROM BIG APPLE TO BIG SKY COUNTRY Summary: 5 Stars
Henry Hart (Arye Gross), an openly gay man, returns from Manhattan into his closet back home in Big Eden, Montana after the grandfather who raised him has a stroke. Coincidentally, a week prior to this, Dean Stewart (Tim DeKay),the straight captain of the football team that he has loved for 20 years (and been through therapy over) returns to the same town with his two young sons and a different view of life than he had back in high school. Has the world changed enough in the interim? Can they come out of the closet long enough to become a couple? And what isn't Pike Dexter (Eric Schweig) the Native American who owns the general store not telling the townsfolk who congregate there? Sit back and enjoy a place where it's the content of your character and not your sexual orientation that determines peoples' opinions. Laugh as the clueless hero can't see or admit what everyone else has already figured out. Featuring a strong supporting cast including Academy Award winner Louise Fletcher and TV/Film regular George Coe, this is a good looking, non-condescending gay comedy which manages to keep it's point of view from becoming preachy. The ending is a bit pat, yet no less satisfying for it. Thoroughly enjoyable.
Movie Review: Big Surprise from Big Eden Summary: 5 Stars
How is it that I missed this movie when it played the theaters? Just rented the DVD and LOVED it (and watched it twice). I admit its viewpoint of rural life is a little romanticized - but who cares? Wouldn't YOU want to live in a town like Big Eden - I know I would. In the accompanying featurette on the DVD, the filmmakers said the reaction during location shooting was very accepting - so who knows. It definitely has shades of the TV series Northern Exposure and mirrors movies like Chocolat/Big Night/Like Water for Chocolate/Tortilla Soup/Frenzy (compare the Widow Thayer's dishes with those of the Inspector's wife) and any other food oriented film. Why are films that elevate food preparation to an art are so whimsical... and good? It is refreshing to see a gay oriented film with excellent writing (good story with fully developed characters), great production values and an accomplished and well rounded cast (too bad Veanne Cox's role was a little pared down). Be sure to watch the deleted scenes - a few of which I thought should have been included in the final movie. Rent this movie, or better yet buy the DVD (I am going to). Movies like this deserve to be supported.
Movie Review: Gay-friendly romantic utopia that we should all discover Summary: 5 Stars
An absolute charmer. If, like me, you've been searching for that really good gay-themed film and had begun to feel that it it would never exist, welcome to the world of BIG EDEN. My partner and I had bought this film a while ago, and had not watched it (staving off the disappointment factor?) So it came as a real surprise to find ourselves being enveloped in this utopian take on life in Montana, and how a small community could encourage and fully welcome two gay males on their bumpy road to becoming a full-fledged couple. With great performances by the two relatively unknown but talented leads (Arye Gross and Eric Schweig) and the pleasure of seeing some terrific veteran film and stage actors (Nan Martin, George Coe, Veanne Cox, Oscar winner Louise Fletcher) do their thing, and the incredible natural scenery as a wondrous backdrop, tyro filmmaker Thomas Bezucha has created a beautiful world and a beautiful film. I see his next film features some bigger names (Diane Keaton, Sarah Jessica Parker et al), and I hope a larger budget does not mean a loss of the amazing charm factor that he brings to BIG EDEN. Highly recommended to any discerning filmgoer, straight or gay.
