Movie Reviews of Beyond the Sea

Movie Review: Couldn't believe it!
Summary: 5 Stars

When I first found out that Kevin Spacey sang all the Darin numbers, I did a double take. I didn't believe it, so I watched the film again, and closed my eyes for the numbers...you'd never know it wasn't Darin except for the digital clarity of the recordings! Anyway, the film is superb, very different from a linear biographical film, which is a nice twist, and the performances are out of this world!! I would recommend this film for Kevin Spacey fans, Bobby Darin fans, and for Caroline Aaron's perfomance with Bob Hoskins - amazing! - just about anyone who wants a rollicking good time watching a film. But beware - the tunes won't leave your head for days, if not weeks! Thumbs up all the way!!!!!

Movie Review: Spacey's Best - and he's no slouch
Summary: 5 Stars

Just watched the Bobby Darin bio with Kevin Spacey. Ten times the movie Ray was, made with love and concern and a performance that amazed me. I'm sorry I missed it on the big screen. Of course I identified all over the place, but this is a great movie. Should've beat Million Dollar Baby and Ray for the Oscars. Definitely a great movie and a terrifyingly honest script (by Spacey) and as silly a movie about music as I have ever seen. Stupid and powerful as the Glenn Miller Story, but the love, the performance! Bobby Darin may be a tenth as great as Ray Charles -- hell, I'm not even a fan, but unlike that phony bio, this is a difficult film with solid emotional punch.

Movie Review: Stunning! A wonderful tribute.
Summary: 5 Stars

He sings, he dances...He directs?

Double oscar winner Kevin Spacey is dazzling in this wonderful tribute to a performer who should never be forgotten. And who better to portray Darin (a singer turned actor) than Spacey (an actor turned singer....and a wonderful singer at that!). Not only is there physical resemblance between the two, but in mannerism and vocal stylings too. Spacey gives a performance that can only be described as Darin-esq and IMHO, he deserves every award going.

If you're a Spacey fan you're sure to become a Darin fan. If you're a Darin fan, you'll adore Spacey. This film is simply awe inspiring- see it!

Movie Review: A Worthy Tribute to a Show Business Legend
Summary: 5 Stars

This top-notch production is a showcase for the multi-talented Kevin Spacey, who co-wrote, directed, and starred (doing all the singing, and rather well). It chronicles Darin's rise to fame, from a childhood marked by a life-threatening illness, to his success as a singer and actor, on into his later days, when Bobby re-fashioned his nightclub act to include anti-war songs. Kate Bosworth excels in her role as Sandra Dee, and the supporting cast is superb, particularly John Goodman, who can always be relied upon to deliver a solid performance. It is a highly entertaining film, and highly recommended. Thank you, Kevin Spacey - well done!

Movie Review: Brings back musicals
Summary: 5 Stars

Fantastic - Kevin Spacey totally nails this performance. The only problem is that it took Spacey years to convince the studios to make this movie and by the time it did get made, Spacey was older than Bobby Darin was when Bobby Darin died! That makes Spacey too old for Kate Bosworth, but Spacey is such a remarkable performer that he somehow makes it work. Also, keep your eyes open for scenes with Peter Cincotti, an incredible young piano player and crooner in his own right. I'm really bummed that this movie did not get the recognition it deserved from fans and critics alike. Let's hope that over time it becomes a cult favorite.
