Movie Reviews of Beyond the Sea

Movie Review: enchanting
Summary: 5 Stars

When I first heard about this movie, I tried to picture Kevin Spacey as Bobby Darin and just couldn't. Then it was announced that Mr. Spacey would be doing all the singing, and I cringed. I decided right then and there that I would not be seeing this movie. Okay, it never came to our dinky theatre, so I never had the chance anyway. Then, one day I was looking for something to rent and "Beyond the Sea" was staring back at me, and there wasn't anything else I hadn't seen that caught my intrest, so I rented it. I watched it 5 times before returning it and bought it as I left the store. Mr. Spacey did indeed do justice to one of my favourite singers of all time. The movie is captivating and totally enchanting. I have never been so happy to be proven wrong!! A definate must own.

Movie Review: Forget what People Magazine wrote
Summary: 5 Stars

As a critic and collector of more than 3,000 DVD titles, Beyond the Sea stands out as an excellent representation of the late Bobby Darin. Kevin Spacey shows why he is one of Hollywood's most valued assets. Few could have played this part completely. Kevin's singing of Bobby's songs is outstanding. Who knew Spacey was so capable. He wrote, directed and stared in this film making it more him than anything Kevin has done in the past. That said; the portrayal of someone that Mr. Spacey admire was right on. I remember seeing Bobby and although there was little physical resemblance to Mr. Darin, the complete package this film offered told the story accurately and with class and enjoyment. This is an excellent film, done by a Hollywood superstar that should be enjoyed by all.

Movie Review: Amazing Spacey
Summary: 5 Stars

Over the last several years I have truly grown appreciative of actors giving completely of themselves to entertain us, along with an appreciation of singers performing what I consider "middle of the road" songs. I have come to expect nothing less than excellence from Kevin Spacey in any role he undertakes but I was extremely pleased with his performance in the singing arena. I watched the movie one night and went online to buy the movie soundtrack the next day. I will definitely watch the movie again in the near future and continue to enjoy the soundtrack. Hopefully Kevin will bless us with more musical performances. Anyone that has an appreciation of the crooners from several years ago will do themselves a favor by spending the time to watch/listen to this movie.

Movie Review: Beyond expectations!
Summary: 5 Stars

I fell in love all over again not only with Bobby Darin but Kevin Spacey as well. I loved the movie and the music and I've tried to take my parents to see it for weeks now but it isn't showing anywhere! Why did they only open in a couple of Art Theaters? It's a shame the public isn't getting a chance to see this wonderful film about such a great performer. My dad never goes to movies but at age 76 he waits patiently for it to come to a theater near him. I've already requested to be notified when it is available on DVD. This is a must own for me. Thanks for all the love that went into making this movie. Kevin deserves an Oscar for his performance. I'd also like to track down a copy of the movie Captain Newman MD when Bobby Darin was nominated for an Oscar.

Movie Review: GREAT FILM -- SPACEY'S MASTERPIECE
Summary: 5 Stars

I am not going to reiterate the details of this biopic.

The movie is fantastic and a true tribute to the great Bobby Darin.

William Ullrich amazed me -- that child is a prodigy!

Spacey did a great job -- I had no idea he could sing and dance so well.

Kate Bosworth did a great job in Dee's role.

I don't know what everybody's problem with John Goodman is.

And as for Spacey being "too old" -- while he certainly does not look like Darin in his 20's, he was convincing in the role -- he took on an artistic challenge and in my humble opinion, excelled.

This film is a labor of love and opens up the world of the great Bobby Darin to a whole new generation of fans.
