Movie Reviews of Beyond the SeaMovie Review: Superb performance ;-> Summary: 5 Stars
Kevin Spacey is amazing. He really is the actor that can do almost anything. Kevin doesn't just act in this - it's almost like he really IS Darin. His Bobby Darin look alike performance in Beyond The Sea was truly brilliant and his vocals and dancing were outstanding too. This movie really details Bobby's life and his love affair with Sandra Dee (Kate Bosworth) fairly accurately. Kevin is a good actor whether he's playing a gangster, criminal or a real-life entertainer - the King of Hollywood.
This movie is good for everyone to see, whether or not you were a Bobby Darin fan or not. It follows the rise of Darin from 'nothing' to the legend he eventually became. The music is great (especially Mack The Knife and the title song Beyond The Sea). If you want a movie with drama, romance and fantastic music, this is a must. I bought this dvd a year ago, and still play it often. It's great and I highly recommend it.
Movie Review: A dozen years in the making Summary: 5 Stars
I came to this film as a Kevin Spacey fan. I was around when Darin was singing, but my interests were elsewhere. Now, I've seen a couple of his films and a DVD, and hopefully, Kevin has revived some interest in his music. For those critics, who complained Spacey was too old for the part; he was just the right age when he first tried to get backing for the film. Finally, he had to produce and direct it himself. He was born to play the part; no one else could have sang like Darin. Kevin was excellent in the role, and, directed the film with imagination and courage. He was given the cold shoulder from the Hollywood Academy Awards, and many critics used the words"vanity piece" to put the, suddenly unpopular, actor in his place. To be fair, there were some critics, Ebert and Roeper, among them, who lauded the film. Thank you Kevin, for trying the unusual and making it work for many of us. Christine Souter
Movie Review: WOW!! Summary: 5 Stars
Beyond the Sea is the story of Bobby Darin. I knew nothing about him before seeing this movie. I didn't think I knew many of his songs. However, I was surprised to hear so many songs I had heard before; I just didn't know he had done them.
Kevin Spacey is simply superb in everything he does in this movie! First and foremost is his singing. These songs are difficult to begin with, but when you are doing your best to copy someone else, it makes it even more difficult. He was completely believable as Bobby Darin.
This is an interesting story with interesting characters and is acted out very well. They even worked in a few song and dance numbers that are staged with dancing like in the older musicals. This adds charm and fun to a very captivating story.
I highly recommend this movie. It is movie-making and acting at their best.
Movie Review: Don't miss this one Summary: 5 Stars
Not only does Spacey do his own singing in this movie but he's got Darren's moves down as well. Obviously a labor of love, the movie is not without some flaws but Kevin Spacey is such a superb, riveting actor that you're likely to overlook any slight imperfections and be entranced by this movie. I've bought just about every book and video about Darren (including some rare video footage) and I'm awed at the way Spacey captures Darren's essence - his personality, his perfectionisn, the whole package. Clearly aware of the limited time available to him, Darren pushed himself to the brink of exhaustion and probably shortened his life even more - but oh, what he accomplished while he had the time!
Put this on your list of "must-see" holiday films, one that has to be see on the big screen. This one ought to catapalt Spacey's reputation even higher...and deservedly so.
Movie Review: Absolutely outstanding!! Summary: 5 Stars
This is by far one of the best pictures I have ever seen. I thoroughly enjoy anything that Kevin Spacey is in. I was somewhat familiar with Bobby Darin before this movie. And the movie made me want to know more about him. I have purchased a Bobby Darin CD (Aces Back to Back), have checked out books from the library and I will try to get my hands on anything else I can find. As for the movie, everyone I've recommended it to has seen it. It's too bad it wasn't in the theatres long enough for more people to see it. I can only hope that when it comes to DVD people will scoop it up. This was definately worth an Oscar nomination. Much to my surprise, it got nothing. I guess that is a credit to Mr. Spacey for not "buying" nominations from the academy members as so many other film promoters do. "Beyond the Sea" is fay and away 'beyond the stars'!
