Movie Reviews of Beyond the SeaMovie Review: beyond The Sea Summary: 5 Stars
If you love Kevin Spacey, Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee you just have to watch this film. I caught the last hour of this movie on cable, and love Kevin Spacey so I had to buy the DVD to see the whole film, and I am glad I did buy it. Beyond The Sea is a brief history of Bobby Darin and his love for Music, his Fans and Sandra Dee.
I was really surprised to know that Bobby Darin was married to Sandra Dee. And I grew up with both Bobby's music and Sandra's Summer Place. I was a fan of both Stars however I had no idea that they were married, a great surprise for me.
Kevin Spacey as always delivers in what ever he does, and in this film he does not disapoint but instead goes one step further by actually doing one hell of a great job singing Bobby's songs. Kevin was "Bobby Darin" in this film.
I don't know what more to say except "Thank You Kevin for this film and your talent" which is next to none. You always keep me entertained no matter what you do, and I just adore you. AND what a voice!
Kevin Spacey is true talent, and is really just huge in his role as Bobby Darin.
I don't know what more to say except if you knew of Bobby Darin, Sandra Dee, and love Kevin Spacey this film is a must see. Also John Goodman does his usual no disapointment in his role as Bobby's manager. The whole cast is a surprise and you won't be disapointed by this film, it is full of fun, music and huge talent. You won't want to miss Kevin Spacey in this one.
Movie Review: Kevin Spacey makes a great Darin! Summary: 5 Stars
I saw this movie in January and it's pretty good. Kevin Spacey even looks like the original Bobby Darin and he even directed this one! And also Sandra Dee (Kate Bosworth) is real pretty and I heard in IMDb.com, the real Bobby Darin's wife Sandra Dee died of a Stroke. This movie is great but Spacey doesn't do any Bobby Darin moves but he's pretty good at making this movie. I also liked the young Bobby Darin (William Ullrich) But when they were showing him in the 1930s, Young Bobby was wearing the wrong clothes. He was just wearing today's casual style. A T-Shirt and Jeans. He could've at least tucked his shirt in but this is a good movie anyway and mostly old people went to see this one since Bobby Darin is a '50s singer. Bobby Darin is my favorite singer of all time! And the original Bobby will be missed by millions even today even though he died in 1973 and I still got a concert of his recorded on my tape. That was his last performance and it was in 1973. My favorite song is Mack the Knife. I was thinking they could've called the movie "Mack is back again." But I guess they didn't choose that since that was the title of his last performance. But Beyond the Sea is a good name too. Kevin Spacey only sang Bobby Darin's hit Beyond the Sea only once but this is a good movie and this is one classic movie you won't wanna miss.
Movie Review: Bravo, Mr. Spacey! Summary: 5 Stars
I am a huge fan of both Bobby Darin and Kevin Spacey, and I don't believe the naysayers and critics who didn't like this film, or thought that it was poorly composed. If you didn't like this movie, then you have no heart, because everyone in the theater when I went to view it was openly wiping tears and commenting on how good it was when the credits rolled.
Spacey won't hesistate to admit that he's not as good as Bobby Darin when it comes to singing, but he is pretty darn close. As a fan of these two guys, even I had some reservations going into the theater, but I was grinning from the very second I heard that familiar opening bass that I adore and didn't stop smiling for the next two hours. I was especially impressed with Spacey's dancing and thought that his transformation into the hippie Darin was so uncanny, it gave me chills. Yes, there are some aspects of Darin's life that had to be cut out, but I enjoyed the movie so much that I forgot about that instantly. I would have liked to have seen a sequence on how Bobby discovered "Mack the Knife" and his insistance on recording it against Dick Clark's advice...it was also THE biggest song of 1959...but I understand time constraints. Kudos to the outstanding supporting cast. This is a must-buy when it's released on DVD and I can't wait to view the extras.
Movie Review: Very Entertaining -- Yes, the Golden Globe was Deserved! Summary: 5 Stars
Finally watched this DVD that I bought months ago, and was pleasantly surprised at how good this movie is. I'd read some reviews that criticized Spacey for being too old or the plot for interrupting the flow with the young Bobby Darin character. No way! Spacey is wonderful and sings amazingly well, thank goodness. (I hate bad singing in musicals.) I could not tell the difference between him and Darin. He even dances well in the (limited) dancing scenes. The story, which moves cleverly from an opening scene with Darin at his oldest back to his childhood, kept me totally engrossed from start to finish. This movie shows the creativity that we crave in films, giving some insight into Darin and Sandra Dee (gorgeously played by Kate Bosworth) while paying tribute to Darin's one consistent characteristic: he was an entertainer, and this movie stays unrelentingly entertaining as well. Most important, the director, Spacey, lets you actually see and hear a lot of the singing and dancing without too much interruption. I found the ending quite touching, but Spacey does not let us wallow in deathbed scenery and there is an upbeat feeling as the credits roll. Well worth a watch if you like Bobby Darin's singing or just an interesting biographical summation. Next - what about a movie of Sandra Dee's life?
Movie Review: Where are the live performances by Kevin!?!? Summary: 5 Stars
Ok, I couldn't bring myself to rate this movie lower than 5 stars. I LOVE the movie, Bobby's music (and I'm 28 years old), Kevin's singing, acting, dancing, and directing. It was a very engaging, enjoyable, and moving movie, and it now ranks as one of my absolute favorite Kevin movies. Kevin is my favorite actor. I love the fantasy musical sequences!
I would rate the DVD lower than 5 stars though because...where are the "Exclusive Bonus Musical performances by Kevin Spacey?" I was so excited to see this special feature listed here since I couldn't go to any of the shows he did around the country (you should've come to New Orleans, Kevin! My grandmother met Bobby Darin in New Orleans, by the way). I'm extremely disappointed that there is no concert footage of Kevin singing live. All we can do is hope and beg that a DVD of one of his concerts is released or that a Spacey Director's Cut of Beyond the Sea is released with tons of extras including concert footage. Deleted scenes would have been nice, too! Putting all of this aside, you should buy this movie! It is excellent and something the entire family can enjoy! I also own the must have soundtrack of Kevin singing Bobby's best songs. Keep on singing, Kevin!!
