Movie Reviews of Best in Show

Movie Review: Guest wins again
Summary: 5 Stars

Ah, what a clever and talented man is Christopher Guest. And what wonderfully funny movies he makes! Best in Show is a delight. The characters shine in their mad eccentricity; they're given the directorial go-ahead to get up, move around and show their obsessive natures. But never does Guest, as director, take potshots at his characters and try to create cheap humour at their expense. Rather, he reveals some of the unpretty underbelly of the contest world (this time it's dog shows) and allows the audience to reach its own conclusions.

As in Waiting for Guffman, we're presented with a panoply of exotics and neurotics and allowed to watch them (and their doggies) try to win the top prize (in Guffman, it was a shot at Broadway.) Guest's humor is always kind, never cruel. And this is Guest movie-making at its best. Just a wonderfully funny and, yes, touching film.

Movie Review: Hilarious
Summary: 5 Stars

Best in Show comes from the geniuses behind This is Spinal Tap. The mockumentary about a dog show in Philadelphia (think Westminster in NY) is hilarious, especially if you have ever either been a part of the competitive show world as a competitor or just someone who likes dogs. The characters, while "types," are well drawn and the film perfectly captures the quirkiness of the competitors and the insanity of dog shows. I don't think I stopped laughing the entire time, although some of the characters were more endearing than others (the yuppie couple of Parker Posey and Kyle McLaughlin, while well-acted, were not particularly pleasant). Eugene Levy with his two left feet (really -- two left feet!), was especially funny and sweet. And Jane Lynch, who plays a lesbian handler, shows the origins of her Glee character. I highly recommend this dvd.

Movie Review: Best in Movies!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Christopher Guest documentary style comedy at it's best! Be prepared for a roller coaster ride of insanity as a wide range of crazed dog owners prepare for the big event. The ensemble cast includes most of Guest's improv regulars we have come to love, and they do not disappoint. Catherine O'Hara is particularly hilarious as the seemingly conservative suburban housewife "Cookie" whose promiscuous past continues to catch up with her throughout the movie. Eugene Levy is the perfect foil as her nerdish husband trying to cope with frequent embarrassment. This is one of those rare, spirited, side-splitting comedies you can watch over and over again and laugh harder each time. Don't forget to watch the outtakes and commentary provided on this DVD version. For you comedy lovers out there, this is a must have!

Movie Review: FUNNY HA HA
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is super funny! I watch it all the time, the characters are what makes this movie. It's documentary style focusing on several different characters each with a dog that is going to the main event. There are a lot of celebrities in this and I laugh so hard every time I watch it. It's cute and funny. I would rent it first if you haven't seen it before because I think you have to have a certain sense of humor to get it but if you liked "Drop Dead Gorgeous" and "But I'm a Cheerleader" you'll like this movie. If you are a dog lover you will love this movie. I say if you have had times when you are down and feeling like crap, than this movie is the remedy. It will make you laugh and before you know it your smiling from ear to ear. AWESOME MOVIE and nothing but FUN in big capitol letters.

Movie Review: Pure hilarity
Summary: 5 Stars

The few poor reviews for this movie make me wonder if they are for a different movie, or possibly the reviewers lost their senses of humor at birth. I can just see the box for this movie and the laughs will start again. If you have ever laughed at Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Fred Willard, or Christopher Guest, I don't see how this movie won't cause a few laughs. Take a few somewhat neurotic people, their babies (normal to slightly neurotic dogs) and one giant dog show, stir them all up, and trust me, it will be funny. I am seriously concerned for anyone that can't laugh at this movie. Will you be more sophisticated after watching this movie? No. Will your blood pressure be lower? Should be. Will you be glad you don't take Muzzy to dog shows? Surely. Relax, its a movie, a very funny movie!
