Movie Reviews of Best in ShowMovie Review: Dog lovers unite Summary: 5 Stars
This is one creative vehicle for many improv comediennes. If you like dogs, and sometimes laugh at some dog owners that seem to go a bit overboard, this movie is definately for you. I really loved Catherine O'Hara's character, Cookie. She cannot go anywhere without some man recognizing her as "the best, and most talented" conquest they ever had. Eugene Levy plays her sweet husband with "literally" two left feet. You have several characters on their way to the big dog show, all wanting their dog to obtain the "Best of Show" title. The movie is shot like a documentary about these many dog owners getting their prize dogs groomed, and getting ready for the coming events. Parker Posey plays a very high strung yuppie, who claims that her dog is a nervous wreck because he doesn't have his busy bee toy. The only nervous wrecks are she and her husband. I really loved their new dog at the end. It's a pug named Skipper... Extremely witty, and hard to forget. You will watch this again and again.
Movie Review: Subtle, Wry Humor at Its Best Summary: 5 Stars
Best in Show has so many fans that it is difficult to say anything original about it. The film concerns several dog owners who travel to Philadelphia in hopes that their dogs will win the coveted "Best in Show" award.
The film is not really about the dogs; it is about the people who love them. People reveal their foibles in the way that they treat their dogs and the competition. My favorite was the yuppie couple (Parker Posey and Michael Hitchcock) who met at Starbucks. They tear into each other when things don't go their way.
Christopher Guest plays a man from Pine Nut, North Carolina, who takes his bloodhound to the show. I laughed when one of the "homefolk" told the bloodhound "You go up there and put some hurt on them Yankee dogs."
My only warning about this film is that the humor is subtler than is the humor in most comedies. Fans of Jim Carrey and Chevy Chase are likely to be disappointed.
I strongly recommend Best in Show.
Movie Review: "God loves terriers" Summary: 5 Stars
Another of Christopher Guest's wonderful studies of an odd little show-business world within worlds, BEST IN SHOW may not be as consistently funny as his previous effort, WAITING FOR GUFFMAN, but it's pretty hilarious nonetheless (and plus it has what is his funniest scene from any of his movies, the scene with Parker Posey as a furious yuppie trying to buy the replacement for her Weimeramer's favorite toy in a pet store). All of Guest's usual repertoire--Eugene Levy, Michael McKean, John Michael Higgins, Michael Hitchcock Jane Lynch, Bob Balaban, Ed Begley Jr. and Jennifer Coolidge and of course the sublime Catherine O'Hara--are at their usual superb best, with a special honorable mention going to Fred Willard as a hilariously vulgar and idiotic dog show television commentator. Through it all, the dogs themselves retain their beauty and their dignity (as Guest and Levy point out on the DVD's optional running commentary, you almost never hear any of the dogs even barking during the entire film).
Movie Review: Great Comic Masterclass. Summary: 5 Stars
After hunting to find a cinema showing "Best In Show" in the UK my friend and I tracked it down to a fleepit in Richmond just outside london. However it was worth the trip. What Guest has done is craft a small comic masterpiece. This film should be seen by any budding actors as it is a fantastic masterclass in comic acting. Showing that you don't have to be over the top to be funny, humour can bee found in the smallest places. The way people talk to each other in this film is at once funny yet totally beleivable. It's a testament to the cast and filmakers that it keeps the feel of a Documentary all the way through and never falls into using normal dramatic movie conventions at any time. I'm sure if you put someone in front of it that had never heard of Guest or any of the other actors and knew nothing of the film, they would think it was a genuine expose on the Dog Show community. All in all a wonderful film that will probably not get the attention and praise that it deserves.
Movie Review: A unique peek into a bizzare world Summary: 5 Stars
This is the first review of a movie I've ever written but this movie forces me into it. It certainly is in my top ten of all time. The only way I know this for sure is the fact that when we're channel surfing and we flip to this movie I am absolutey compelled to continue watching. I really can't think of any other movie that elicits this response. It's very weird to me. There is no substitute for fine writing and this movie has it in spades. The characters are developed as soon as you first encounter them but this doesn't mean it's on a superficial basis. This may all sound too complicated but I'm just trying to explain myself. Bottom line this movie is side-splittingly funny and surprising at every turn. I bet it was actually a hard movie to make but made to look easy. I've shown dogs in the past and because of this I've met lots of "dog people"(I'm not talking about your typical/normal owner)and I'll tell you...this movie's not far off...very scarey.
