Movie Reviews of Best in Show

Movie Review: I Give It 5 Dog Biscuits!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I don't even remember if this movie made it to the theaters in my town. This is the kind of small gem that slips past critics and moviegoers and either finds an audience in the video market, or passes away into obscurity. Those viewers who enjoyed the improvisational comedy of Christopher Guest's previous efforts (This Is Spinal Tap, Waiting For Guffman) will love Best In Show. It features a wonderful cast that includes Michael McKean and John Michael Higgins, the flambouyantly gay owners of a prize winning shih tzu, a yuppie couple (Parker Posey and Michael Hitchcock) whose Weimaraner is as neurotic as they are, Christopher Guest as the proud owner of a Bloodhound named Hubert who also fancies himself a ventriloquist, and Catherine O'Hara as a former nympho who keeps running into old boyfriends (she's had hundreds of them), much to the chagrin of geeky husband Eugene Levy. They are all competing for Best In Show at the prestigious Mayflower Kennel Club dog show. Their ridiculous and outrageous behavior is captured in a documentary style. Fred Willard chews the scenery hilariously as a commentator who seems to know nothing about dogs or anything else for that matter. Don't let this one pass you by, it's well worth the price. The DVD also comes with some very funny deleted scenes and a commentary by Guest and Levy.

Movie Review: Funny movie, sad satire/commentary
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie was hysterical in its parody of the psychotic dog owners and how sadly serious they take their pets. There are not a ton of outright jokes (the TV broadcaster covering the show throws some out) it is all poking fun at the over the top dog owner and the great lengths they go to for their pet. I think those who will find it the funniest know a friend or family member who lives a similar life (usually childless-like the ones in the movie:). I have a relative who does ridiculous things for their pet and spends a ton of money on it that is not necessary. I honestly think some people would save their dog over a person they treat them so crazy. Mind you, I am a dog person and love my dog, take care of it well but she doesn't go to a day spa and have jewelry! You can treat dogs respectfully without pampering them to excess and making your whole world revolve around them; to me it seems the core of this movie is making fun of those who cross the line between pet owner and pet pampering to extremes. I think the negative reviewers had different expectations (one even thought it was a documentary-Ha!). It is a total farcical look at dog owners going to a dog show and how depressingly seriously they take it (so much so it is funny). Hope this helps.

Movie Review: Intelligent and Incredibly Funny
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the few comedies of last year that actually sticks out. This is a movie that suceeds only because it is subtle in its ways. It does not go all out for laughs, but instead has intelligent jokes and running gags that make it what it is. This film was overlooked by many people because it was not a major release, and because it did not have any "major" stars. This is a film that many people missed out on.

The real comedy comes from the great script and the excellent directing abilities of Christopher Guest. All of the essential comedic aspects are here, a great script, a director that does not go for the cheap laughs, and an incredible cast. There are many characters, and a few major plot lines, and all but one of them work. The plot with the lesbians falls a little flat, but Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara more than make up for their mistakes.

This film suceeds on more than one level. It is intelligent, and it will make you laugh. This is a rare feat for most films today. Most of them go for the cheap laugh and any simpleton can find the humor in those movies. This one goes for a little more intelligent laughs, and suceeds. Not every joke or gag is a gem, but when this movie is on, it hits hard.

Movie Review: One of the Funniest Films I've seen in a long time!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This was a surprizingly hilarious movie. We rented the DVD on a whim, neither my husband nor myself had ever heard of this movie, and we are very glad we did! It is fantastic! It is done as a sort of "mockumentary" and we were reminded of another great film "Vernon, Florida", where it's just takes of people just talking to the camera until something interesting is said. The cast of people who make up the bizarre world of dog shows is believable in its' exageration and bizareness.

The DVD has a selection of deleted scenes that is almost as long as the movie!! Some I could see why they should be deleted, but others I think should have been left in (i.e., the beachball scene!!!)

You find yourself cheering for all of the dogs, and are hard pressed to choose one to be Best in Show. The cast is fantastic, from the elegant hotel manager to the obnoxious announcer! You want to give valium to that stressed out lawyer couple and you wonder what Cookie Fleck saw in her husband (Eugene Levy) to make her give up her life as a "party-girl".

This movie does best with all the improvisation, you can't script this type of dialogue and make it believable! Run, don't walk, but Run and rent or buy this today! A great film!

Movie Review: DOG GONE GOOD
Summary: 5 Stars

Who would think that an insightfully funny film about dogs and their owners/showers could ever exist? Thanks to director/writer Christopher Guest and a wham bam of a cast, BEST IN SHOW is remarkably entertaining. It offers a lot of improvisational dialogue that works amazingly well in revealing the ins and outs of the personalities of dog owners and their desire to take home the "gold." Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara are marvelous as the down in luck middleclass owners, she has a history of many pre-marital sexual conquests; Jane Lynch and Jennifer Coolidge are the lesbian couple whose dog has won best in show two years in a row and want the third desperately; Parker Posey and Michael Hitchcock are hilarious as the yuppies from catalogue hell; Michael McKean and John Michael Higgins play the gay couple with the adorable Schitzu; Guest himself is the hilarious owner of a bloodhound and a ventriloquist to boot. Rounding out the fine ensemble cast are Ed Begley Jr and Fred Willard, particularly humorous as the Howard Cosell-like announcer. The winner actually surprised me, but the movie is so entertaining it works. A fine example of off the wall comedy that appeals to mainstream audiences.
