Movie Reviews of Berlinguer: I Love YouMovie Review: Quintessential Benigni Summary: 5 Stars
I must fully disagree with Torcgirl's review. Certainly this movie is NOT for everyone (especially anyone less than 18 yrs old), but it is a unique, almost stream-of-consciousness (at times) story (yes, there is a plot) that is a bit freudian a bit joycean, and definitely verbally pornographic. It is quintessential Benigni, and brilliant as such. Benigni was a great admirer of the leftist leader, Berlinguer, and his monolog about how communism would emerge almost like a natural process, is thought-provoking, funny and a unique perspective to say the least. To see how broadly popular Berlinguer was in Italy, go to the YouTube clip showing his funeral event in Rome -- biggest crowds ever in Rome. Anyway, the film, for me and my significant other, is a refreshing change from the typical comedies, and you should definitely give it a shot. Please leave a review if you do watch it, as I'd like to see if anyone else agrees with my opinion.
Summary of Berlinguer: I Love YouWidely hailed as one of the world's funniest men, Academy AwardŽ-winner Roberto Benigni (Life is Beautiful) has been one of Italy's most popular actors since the 1980s. Starring in his debut performance, Benigni is Mario Cioni, a hapless young man who lives with a tormented and antagonistic relationship with his mother. When he is told his mother has died, he returns home to find that she is very much alive and waiting to berate him for not showing up for her funeral quickly enough.
