Movie Reviews of Berlin Alexanderplatz - Criterion Collection

Movie Review: very impressive, but the epilogue is weird
Summary: 4 Stars

At last, after many years Berlin Alexanderplatz is available again on home video. It was originally shown on television in Germany and later in America on PBS. The miniseries is 15 hours and 40 minutes long and has many good scenes.

The series is based on the novel of the same name by Alfred Döblin.

The story takes place in Weimar era Germany ans is about Franz Biberkopf who fresh out of prison and trying to get his life back together. He is initally on probation but later manages to have it lifted so he can find a job. He later makes friends who are involved in the black market and gets into trouble.

Not having read the novel I cannot give a basis for comparison, but I have heard that is is a faithful adaptation. I found the epilogue to be very strange and think that Salvador Dali would be impressed by it. A few scenes in the epilogue are probably too grotesque for some people.

The release is a 7 disc set with the series on discs one through six and the special features on discs six and seven.

The special features include the original Berlin Alexanderplatz film from 1931, a 1980 documentary on the production of the series, an interview with Peter Jelavich, the author of the book "Berlin Alexanderplatz: Radio, Film, and the Death of Weimar Culture", along with two new documentaries about the series and its rerelease with focus on the digital restoration and enhancement of the original camera negative.

This is a fine release and Rainer Werner Fassbiner's finest work.
