Movie Reviews of Berkeley Square

Movie Review: A rival to "Upstairs, Downstairs"
Summary: 5 Stars

As a devoted fan of British television series, particularly the period pieces like "Upstairs, Downstairs," I was completely mesmerized by "Berkeley Square" and watched it in two viewings. This series is so well done with authentic costumes, settings, and surperb acting that it rivals the Masterpiece series "Upstairs, Downstairs," which chronicles the lives and loves of the aristocratic "upstairs" Bellamy family and their loyal "downstairs" servants. In this series, however, the "upstairs" families are not all worthy of the loyalty of their servants. The viewer realizes that life at any level of the Edwardian society was not easy, most particularly the precarious position of the servants whose lives could be devastated at the whim of their employers. Unfortunately, the series does not have captions (as British films rarely do) and some of the dialogue is lost. Never-the-less, I highly recommend it and would love to see a sequel released soon.

Movie Review: Superb period piece.
Summary: 5 Stars

British period pieces are my wife's and mine favorite entertainment. This ranks as one of the best. We did not see it on television: my sister loaned it to us and we so thoroughly enjoyed it that we purchased it.

We did not see Upstairs, Downstairs. The jacket review for Berkeley Square compares the latter to Upstairs, Downstairs. We enjoyed Berekely Square immensely and accordingly purchased the Upstairs, Downstairs set.

Though not familiar with most of the cast members, Berkeley Square is brilliantly acted. The costuming is superb with a rich portrayal of Edwardian England and the class system that would end following the two world wars.

It has something of a Dickens feel to it as characters are woven into the plot, exiting and then reappearing. Some online reviewers have been critical of the script and directing. We enjoyed both and highly recommend it if one's tastes go to British period pieces.

Movie Review: Hooked on BBC ...
Summary: 5 Stars

Berkeley Square was my first BBC production purchased at Amazon, or ever. I watched it over one weekend (couldn't wait for each installment), and then watched it again at a more leisurely pace over the following week. The second watch revealed small details I had missed the first time around, the hallmark of a good series.

The characters are those whom you really come to care for. I was sad to see the series end ... wanted to know what happened in their lives next.

Get this series. It's worth twice the price. You will laugh and cry and wish it could continue on as I did. Good family viewing as well. I look forward to sharing it with my 14 year old niece this coming summer.

Thanks to Berkeley Square, I have now accumulated quite a library of BBC DVDs. Many, many hours of very pleasurable viewing thus far and to look forward to in the future.

Movie Review: Excellent Mini-Series
Summary: 5 Stars

This was such an amazing mini-series with a brilliant cast and multiple storylines that kept you totally engrossed from start to finish. I wonder why the BBC did not continue after only ten episodes? I loved each of the nannies and their stories were compelling enough to have carried on for several more seasons. It was a treat to see actor Jason O'Mara who I just discovered in the Monarch of the Glen series. I am surprised that the actresses who starred in this stellar production did not go onto bigger and better roles. No one can touch the Brits when it comes to great television programming, they appreciate their history and create so many unforgettable films showcasing it. Too bad we in the US are so caught up in the whole reality genre which is truly embarrasing espeically after watching such magnificent shows like this. Thankfully, the DVD's are available through Amazon.

Movie Review: Incredibly good...
Summary: 5 Stars

This miniseries was obviously meant to branch into a longer running series and for reasons beyond my comprehension it did not. So...first things first...if a few loose ends in the finale will annoy you beyond bearing, don't consider viewing this series.

If you love authentic period drama with accomplished actors and great storytelling, "Berkeley Square" is a definite keeper.

What I liked about "Berkeley Square" was its effort to maintain a balanced hand in character development. The principles and the guest characters all have proper motivations and credibility in their actions. The period aspects of the series are also frighteningly accurate in an era where children were to be seen and not heard and were often so ignored by their own parents and guardians they were at the mercy of the servants paid to raise them.
