Movie Reviews of Beowulf

Movie Review: 'Techie" Version of Old English Epic
Summary: 4 Stars

Beowulf, an epic poem, was written in the early 8th century. Now we have Beowulf, the semi-animated, techie film, which was made in 1999.

It has an excellent cast: Ray Winstone, Anthony Hopkins, John Malkovitch, Robin Wright Penn, Brenda Gleeson and for a treat Angelina Jolee plays the merciless mother.

The plot of the poem is that the mighty warrior Beowulf slays the demon Grendel. This causes devastating revenge by the monster's ruthlessly vindictive, but beautiful mother. Beowulf becomes King and then dies while fighting a dragon.

Beowulf is a challenge to interpret into something commercial that all will enjoy. Artistic license was taken and some parts of the original poem were changed. The movie honors the poem in many ways, and reveals respect for the time of heroes. Some parts do not match the poem at all, but you give the writer's creative credit for trying.

Movie Review: Heroic
Summary: 4 Stars

Initially the animated style of the move turned me off. I thought why don't they just make it live action? But I really like this movie after watching it despite my initial misgivings. The story is epic, the acting terrific, and yes the animation is actually quite good.
I also had misgivings about the story itself, which suggests that Beowulf is less than honest about his dealings with Grendel's mother. But if you view the movie not as a canonical Beowulf, but as a representation of the spirit of Norse Mythology the movie has much worth.
The story is different than the poem, but the spirit of the movie is closer to the spirit of Norse Mythology than many other versions of this story put to film. The mother of Grendel is obviously the queen of all wicked witches, Gullveig as well as Angreboda the mother of monsters.Beowulf gives in to temptation, but in the end proves that he is a hero.

Movie Review: Strays from the source material, but still a great time at the movies!
Summary: 4 Stars

I was skeptical about this one. I love the story. I read it in high school, and I think that I was the only student who enjoyed it, and so of course I had high expectations for this film version. I was not disappointed! The motion capture animation really takes it to an entirely new dimension. You totally feel like you are surrounded by an entirely new world...and Grendel is freaking scary. I want to go back, so that I can see it in 3D. I will buy this DVD when it comes out, and I hope that it is the R or NC-17 rated cut.

By the way, this is NOT a film for children. Extreme violence and some nudity are present. Should not have been rated PG-13.

Movie Review: This not your grandfather's Beowulf?
Summary: 4 Stars

With monsters, crossbreeding with dragons and shape shifting this
movie plays out more like a fantasy than the elder epic classic poem.
The Vikings that the poem is about are the same who raided the English coast and set up kingdoms there ( called Dane law).
So this history is one of legend of a hero who overcame some sort of monster
who ate men. That the poem was written down after about 300 years
makes it contemporary to the Saxon invasion of England that King Arthur
was involved with ( another legend).
I liked the movie: it has been turned into a fun
story of promises and revenge between men and dragons.

Movie Review: Cool dvd
Summary: 4 Stars

Ok - I will admit that Angelina Jolie was a big draw, but I would have seen this movie any ways. The graphics/cgi in this movie are great. real cool. I think these are the most realistic CGI people I've ever seen. I vaguely remembered reading the original Beowulf way back when. From the extras they say this is a little different take on the original. This is a real good story, there is a lot of skill that went into bringing the characters and story to life. The battle/fight scenes are excellent, and it's got good drama and an interesting story that kept my attention all the way through. I really enjoyed this. Totally entertaining.
