Movie Reviews of Beowulf

Movie Review: Please, people, it is supposed to be entertainment!
Summary: 5 Stars

The value of this gloriously rendered visual spectacle is entertainment. Forget the literary parallels with, or deviations from, a timeless classic epic poem. Forget religious issues, high moral and philosophical ponderings, forget deep, complex characterizations, subliminal messages and historical realism. Just sit back and enjoy what the movie, unapologetically and masterfully intends to be, which is pure, first-rate entertainment. There is no need to go beyond the simple story messages of the value of courage, even when coupled with bombastic lack of humility; Beowulf is many things and lacks many virtues, but the man is brave, period, and makes no apologies for the fact. The human weaknesses and the price to pay for them, often extending far into the future and beyond the original generation, should be self evident and sufficient, no additional philosophizing need be applied here. And most viewers agree that the simply awesome visual effects and masterful use of state-of-the-art CGI technology make this film a non-stop feast for the eyes. Cartoon-like? Sure. Accurate? Of course not. Politically correct? Definitely not. Pure, enjoyable entertainment with great visuals, excellent music score and impeccably cast characters? Now you get it.

Movie Review: The Gods' Gift to English Teachers
Summary: 5 Stars

The most daunting task in teaching High School English is having to begin the year, and a new class, with Beowulf. While there are those students who actually get into it - the truth is - most don't. Of course, those reading this review do. The telling here is much more accurate than "Beowulf & Grendel" of a few years back - and loses none of the darkening moods and violence which make the epic what it is. Every High School Senior English class would do well to begin with this film which is without question, the most visually faithful rendering available - far more effective than struggling with the text. Best of all, your students will, for once, at least, agree, and may even be inspired to read it.

Movie Review: MY HERO.
Summary: 5 Stars

One of the best mature animated films since Heavy Metal. I am a fan of Neil Gaiman's works and this is a well told story along with Roger Avery. This is one of Robert Zemeckis's masterpieces and I simply love it. So what if its animated? There is a live-action version called Beowulf & Grendel, but there is just no comparison. I mean the animated version has beautiful landscapes, especially the fjords, more colorful and more alive where as the other one is more dull and let's face it there is no dragon in it. Beowulf is better being animated, because it doesn't have to be all real because its Fantasy and I love it.

Movie Review: Well done and excellent moral to story
Summary: 5 Stars

Didn't read it when I was supposed to, way back, but this looks like the 'real thing' and is very well made. The major theme is that people often get ahead partly through some kind of misdeed or succumbing to a temptation, but the consequences will never stop haunting and hurting those you care about. That's what seemed to resonate with me, at least. The nudity was not gratuitous and the special effects were great and not overdone as in many movies about 'sagas.' Hope you give it a try and enjoy it.

Movie Review: Entertaining Fantasy Movie!
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie had almost everything you would want from a sword and sorcery movie. It doesn't have near as many characters as Lord of the rings nor is their much magic. This movie makes up for that with its psychological intelligence and suspense. The special effects are pretty cool too. The characters look life like as well. The script is very good. This movie has strong fantasy violence and adult situations that kids will not understand.
