Movie Review: WONDERFUL. INSANELY WONDERFUL.
Summary: 5 Stars
Ben Folds is a wildly talented fellow. This DVD displays that in full orchestral regalia, showing that his signature rock style of stark humanity, bitterness and tragedy, humor, and deep tenderness is more than appropriate to this often overused and highly overblown medium for showcasing an artists' "diversity."
Despite the poor sound quality (by "poor" I mean not up to the lofty standards by which orchestral music is normally recorded; it sounds okay for my more rock-based sensibilities), I have to give this DVD the highest possible marks for its perfect blend of Folds' singularly subversive rock, WASO's wonderful performance, the cinematography which captures the vibe of the outdoor "Summer Concert Series" feel, and Mr. Folds' public service announcements that these hometown arts on display here in Perth, and by extension in towns and cities everywhere, deserve and need support.
There are some instances of coarse language in the performance, but no adult should be offended. My 5 year old doesn't watch those parts (I know exactly where they are), but she does enjoy the music.
One of the best videos in my collection (full of Beatles, Rush, Sheryl Crow, Led Zeppelin, U2, Cream, Allman Bros. and many others). It's cheap. Buy it.
