BELIEVE: EDDIE IZZARD (2009) is a fun and interesting documentary about the great comedian/actor/writer whose real name actually is Eddie Izzard. I've loved this man from the time I first asked "Who the [...] is that?!" back in the 1990s. God, he was funny.
At the same time, I noticed an actor here and there. It never struck me it was Izzard until I happened upon the credits of one forgettable film. Today he is recognized right away from his pivotal role in VALKYRIE- and one day I'd like to see him in a period piece as Dr. Samuel Johnson.
In fact I have told my wife if a movie is made about me, I want Eddie to play me.
This documentary, though a bit fuzzy on details and with much of it in Eddie's slurred narration, is a must-see. It brought back memories from the comedy scene of the 1980s and 1990s (not in America, in Britain). It showed a bit of the history of British humor, and I especially loved the fact I learned: whenever the Tories are in power, comedy is GREAT. I suppose they suffer when Labour is at the helm.
You'll learn about Eddie's childhood, his father, his reasons for battening down his emotions and for cross-dressing. It's fun to see him discuss his transvestitism in terms you'd use for observations about the garbage man or the weather. It's very refreshing to see him as he is, suffering with work, backstage and all the while I was running some film clips in my mind.
Most shocking of all was round about 2000 (maybe I'm mistaken about the year), Izzard was charged with some weird kind of British fraud charge...because he was recycling some material. That's the way he works, you dolts! My wife and I still listen to George Carlin from the 1970s and we laugh as hard as we did when we first heard it. Only Izzard is able to accomplish that same feat as a comedian.
The excellence of this documentary was that I was able to go directly from it to watching Eddie "Live at Wembley", his huge aspiration as a performer. Somehow- perhaps it's his film career- he's not as funny at Wembley. Still he was a hoot.
Watch this. It is well worth having, as a historical document of this century's greatest comedian. With appearances by Sir Anthony Hopkins (Eddie's most famous big fan), Robin Williams, George Clooney and a few old-time British comedians whom you will not recognize, it's a good, balanced look at a good, balanced man.
It makes me shudder to think of what could have gone wrong with Izzard over the years.
