Movie Reviews of Beethoven Lives Upstairs

Movie Review: Beethoven Lives Upstairs
Summary: 5 Stars

This Emmy-winning film is visually beautiful and moving, and also very accurate historically. Like the boy in the movie, a real-life young boy named Gerhard von Breuning enjoyed a special relationship with the composer while residing nearby. As an adult, von Breuning wrote about his experiences in a book titled after the name of Beethoven's building, Aus dem Schwarzspanierhaus. The talented actor who plays Beethoven (Neil Munro) looks remarkably like pictures of Beethoven from this period in his life. Much of the dialogue is drawn from Beethoven's own letters, conversation books, and other writings, and most of the action really took place. The musical score includes performances of Beethoven's masterpieces by some of the best international performers. This is one of my favorite DVDs, and very popular with friends to whom I have lent it. Highly recommended.

Movie Review: Beethoven Lives Upstairs and hits home!
Summary: 5 Stars

Excellent video - reminds me of HBO Composer Specials. I use those and now this in my 5th and 6th grade music classes. Humanizes Beethoven and lets people understand the difficulties he had as a deaf musician/composer. "Fictional" child adds a nice touch and helps kids relate to, as my students sometimes refer to "all those dead guys" that wrote music!
My only disappointment is that the DVD is not in chapters - you have to Fast Forward through the DVD to get to where you were the day (or class) before. It can take 15 to 20 minutes to get 35 to 40 minutes into the video - If it weren't for the DVD quality I may have bought the VHS so I could leave it "parked" for the next class.

Movie Review: Beethoven Lives Upstairs
Summary: 5 Stars

My grand-daughters used to listen to the CD every night and loved it. There was a fire in their house and they lost most of their possessions. Several months later, when their house was rebuilt, and we were getting close to Christmas, one of them e-mailed me to say that she would love it if I could offer them the CD again.

Our grandson, 7 years old, listens to it also. Friends of his mother were very impressed when listening to music, he identified the composer as being Beethoven.

I only heard the highest compliments about this recording.I am sorry I cannot say more because I live far away from the children and have not heard it myself.

Movie Review: Human side of Beethoven well-presented
Summary: 5 Stars

This video tells the story of a young boy whose father has recently died and whose mother has now rented the upstairs of their home to an eccentric composer, Ludwig van Beethoven. The deaf composer bangs around at all hours of the day and especially night as he works on his 9th Symphony. The video presents a very human picture of the great composer, struggling with his loss of hearing. A connection is made between boy and composer which is touching. This film is an excellent way to pique a beginner musician's interest in the music of Beethoven and in Beethoven himself.

Movie Review: Stalker + Crazy Man = 55 minutes of bliss
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is hilarious. Totally inaccurate, but hilarious. (If you think Beethoven 1. would be conducting before 1850 and 2. wouldn't know when his piece that HE WROTE ended, you're sorely mislead.) Good for people who don't know anything about music; bad for anyone who has any respect for the dead and music. Please don't show this in schools; you'll make kids think that Beethoven was crazy along with every other composer ever. Please don't tell kids lies by showing this or AMADEUS or any other bogus "music" movie.
