Movie Review: Eroica The day that changed music forever.
Summary: 5 Stars
For lovers of Beethoven this DVD is a must. This music drama presents a well acted and convincing portrayal of the first public performance of Beethovens's Symphony No 3 (Eroica) in Vienna 1805. This was a milestone performance in that the symphony changed dramatically in style and expectations from this point on. The music and structure made a dramatic switch from meer entertainment to having a message. The audience had to think and feel!
Unlike the majority of composers that came before, Beethoven was a free agent and not on the payroll of nobility. The Eroica (Heroism) was inspired by Beethoven's personal feelings about his idol Napoleon. This potrayal shows Beethoven when the onset of deafness had begun to become a problem, and it's affect on his ability to communicate with others.
Apart from enlightening the view on the importance of this work, this DVD has been structued in two parts, one is the full performance with dramatic breaks, the other is an unbroken performance of Beethoven's Eroica for listening without interruption.
