Movie Reviews of BedazzledMovie Review: A Must Own - Classic Peter Cook/Dudley Moore Summary: 5 Stars
Bedazzled:Faust as Shakespeare in Love:Shakespeare. A very sly, witty masterpiece. There is absolute joy in the subtle wordplay as well as the slapstick: Dudley Moore, dressed as a nun, jumping on a trampoline. Peter Cook is the smarmy guy-in-charge [Beelzebub] who's 'helping' poor Stanley [Dudley Moore] by granting him wishes - each of which is a twisted interpretation of a simple desire. Stanley encounters and has to struggle with the 7 deadly sins, including Raquel Welch as 'Lust'. Dated, yes, but just as delightful as ever. The movie is uneven and runs out of steam before the ending...but so what. I treasure the performance of Cook and Moore. A brilliant piece of work.
Movie Review: Excellent faustian comedy ! Summary: 5 Stars
Trying to connect a comedy based on the dark mood of the Faustian legend , Cook and Moore pulled remarkably well . The jokes go for a double channel ; visual and verbal ; kinetic movie with nonstop pace ; with enough outrageous and inventive to satisfy the most exacting viewer . Raquel Welch was never sexiest than this one . Stimulating comedy and through the years has increased its status as a fundamental cult movie. The trampoline scene is a classic.
Forget the another version . Hurley is a very beautiful woman but she will never the sexual punch of Raquel Welch.
In the other hand , the dazzling direction of Stanley Donen makes an almost unbeatable handicap.
Movie Review: Excellent Film!!! I give it a 5 Star Rating! Summary: 5 Stars
Saw this movie as a teenage boy shortly after it was released circa 1968 on later nite TV and loved it......Years later in the late 90's it surfaced on VHS and was hard to get........Excellent Movie!!!!! There was never a need to remake this film just like the Thomas Crown Affair....Both remakes don't cut it......So happy to see it on DVD...Make it a part of your movie collection just in case TMC and AMC disappear (the only places you're likely to see it) Peter Cook and Dudley Moore (the UK's Abbott and Costello) provide intellectual humor....and Raquel Welsch is somk'in hot in this film as "Lillian Lust The babe with the bust" I promise you won't be dissappointed.......
Movie Review: Hilarious! Summary: 5 Stars
There's no doubt that the late Dudley Moore was underrated as a comedic performer. "Bedazzled" shows what he could do, and his incredible range (in the scenes in which he's given his wishes by the Devil, he portrays, among other things, a daft supercilious vaguely Scottish intellect, a rich prig, and an Oxbridge professor). Just the anguished pop star face he makes in the scene parodying the 60s-style "Top of the Pops" show is enough to make me cry with laughter. He even wrote the theme song! The film itself looks quite good as well, and has a swingin' London/psychedelic overtone that holds up better than many of its contemporary films. Well worth seeing.
Movie Review: Smart, hilarious, and original Summary: 5 Stars
The only downside to seeing this stunningly hilarious comedy is the frustration you feel that these guys never pulled off anything like it again. This film is so brilliantly creative and funny, you hunger for more. The targets they aim at are many and they nail 'em all--pop stars, religion, the wealthy, the pompous. The scene in which Peter Cook plays a snotty, aloof pop singer whose fans grow evermore crazed as he blatantly ignores them is a timeless classic. Has anything really changed in the last thirty years? Nobody gets off easily in this film and nobody really deserves to. The film never seems preachy, however, it's too damn funny.
