Movie Reviews of Bedazzled

Movie Review: Love Me!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Pete and Dud's greatest moment this side of Derek & Clive. A great film, that fits snuggly into, whilst satirising Swinging 60s London - this is one of my favourite films.

Simple premise - the Devil gives a hopeless loser 7 wishes in exchange for his soul, so Dud can claim the woman of his dreams (Elanor Bron) - except, Cook (as the Devil!) constantly takes advantage of the flaws in each scenario...your basic Faustian "thang".

If you really want to be critical of the film, it could be claimed that the structure is basically a series of sketches...but these are great sketches! Whether it's the Leaping Nuns of Beryl or Cook scheming his way into a little old ladies' home and stealing her jam, Pete and Dud have produced a one-of-a-kind piece of cinema.

Moore also supplied a great score (recently re-released on CD!) -the finest sequence being the "Top of the Pops" bit, where Moore croons "Love Me" like Frankie Lane on speed, whilst an ice cold Cook performs "Bedazzled" with such lines as "I'm not interested. I'm unavailable". A pretty decent sumation of their personas.

This film should be on DVD asap - and the remake forgotten equally as fast, although the casting of Liz Hurley almost sounded like a joke Cook would have made....

Movie Review: Bedazzled: An Essential Film
Summary: 5 Stars

Bedazzled is a black comedy based on the Faustian legend. A restaurant cook(Dudley Moore) makes a deal with the devil (Peter Cook) in exchange for the love of a woman.Classic and unforgettable, this important film has been unavailable for some time. You'll see Dudley Moore's character as an animated fly,as well as a cigar-chomping nun who lusts for Racquel Welch- in an early role as a stripper! The devil gives Dudley wishes in exchange for his soul, but adds hilariously unexpected twists for his own warped amusement.Dudley can only escape his wishes by "blowing raspberries" and uttering the phrase "Julie Andrews! " An excellant cast, an inspired director (Stanley Donen), and a hilariously unique script make this the best film of its genre.A good time will be had by all, and an important lesson will be learned by all who see this timeless masterpiece of irreverence and the triumph of good over evil. It is a travesty that such a classic film is unavailable when so many thoughtless and gratuitious films of this type are being made and sold. This is the film to judge all other Faustian comedies by, and to date, it has no equal.

Movie Review: Like a Frobisher and Gleason Raspberry Flavored Ice Lolly

The work of Peter Cook and Dudley Moore's "Beyond the Fringe" takes it's cues from Britain's the Goons and anticipated the more edgy comedy of Monty Python. That said, "Bedazzled" is a deliciously manic reworking of the Faust tale. Essentially, the schnook played by Moore plays straight man to Cook's Lucifer a.k.a George Spiggot. The film's premise is Moore's Stanley Moon selling his soul to the devil for seven wishes all entailing him being involved romantically with a co-worker(Eleanor Bron). However, because of Stanley's lack of specificity, his wishes lead to something less than he desired. The film contains many funny vignettes. My favorites are Stanley's rock star fantasy and a sequence where Stanley and Bron's character, Margaret Spencer, have an extramarital affair but have guilt pangs because Margaret's husband is a saint personified. Moore is fine here but he's outshown by Cook's cheeky Satan. Bron, aside from being a luscious beauty, is an adept comedian as shown here and previously in the Beatles, "Help!" The film is brimming with great visual and verbal humor, some of it veddy British. This flick is a real comic treat.

Movie Review: The best comedy to come out of most decades
Summary: 5 Stars

Why this film is not on DVD yet the remake is, is beyond me. Anyway, most of what needs to be said has been said, so let me just say this film is fantastic but I have a question: I have seen in other reviews that at the end, it is revealed that the 100-billion soul race was really a joke by God. I'm sorry, but I've seen the movie four times and have never gotten that from the end. The reason Lucifer is not allowed back into heaven is that he gave Stanley back his soul out of pride; the competition is only mentioned by him. So can future reviewers please clear this up, or someone revise their review? Because if it is a silent revelation, it has been lost on me four times.
Anyway, I can't imagine that review being very helpful, so I'll add that Peter Cook and Dudley Moore are fantastic together onscreen, and Cook completely makes this movie although Moore is great as well. Its attitude towards religion is great, and the portrayal of the devil perpetrating not mass terror but isolated acts of cheeky mischief is fantastic.
So buy it now, and buy it again if and when it comes out on DVD.

Movie Review: At last!
Summary: 5 Stars

Finally a DVD of "Bedazzled" has been released in the United States. This is simply one of the funniest movies ever made. It is packed with razor-sharp dialogue and delivery. The cast is perfect. The thick 60's vibe holds up very well in this context.

It is perhaps not surprising that "Bedazzled" made little impact in the U.S. when it came out. It consists almost entirely of people standing around talking, which even in those days was problematic for many Americans.

To his great credit, Peter Cook was able to insert a coherent and meaningful discussion of theological issues into his hilarious script without bogging it down at all. I suppose you'd have to call this irreverent humor, but it is far from disrespectful or offensive.

If you don't mind paying attention to a comedy, then you will be rewarded with a smart, layered, consistently side-splitting movie.

The picture and sound on this disk seem fine and clean, if not fabulous. The extras are unexceptional.
