Movie Reviews of Beau PereMovie Review: I Wish Americans Could Make Films Like This Summary: 5 Stars
Sadly, a film like this could never be made in the United States. It's more than just the fact that a story about an older man having a sexual relationship with his 14-year-old stepdaughter would never get made or would get a MPAA rating assuring that no one would ever see it. It's that American sensibilities would change the story into something dirty and degrading. It would be totally unlike the beautiful, yet painful, story presented in this French film.On the surface, this story begins like Nabakov's Lolita--a young girl is left with her stepfather when her mother is killed in an automobile accident. The similarities end here, however. Remy is no Humbert. He loved his wife (in his fashion) and has no designs on his stepdaughter until she professes her desire for him. Remy's intellectual "morality" then struggles with his natural desire for the girl until he is overcome, not without some help. Their relationship then progresses to its inevitable end but not with the smoldering ruin that would be the American version of the story but with two immature people growing up a little bit. I found this film to be a wonderful experience. I wish films like this could be made in this country without ending up like The Crush or Poison Ivy. Instead, Americans have to settle with reading subtitles and coping with Puritanical morals. Still, it's worthwhile to do so with a movie like this. (Note: In my DVD version of this film, the subtitles got off-track with the dialogue for about twenty minutes half-way through the film and then righted themselves.)
Movie Review: A Brave Film, not only for 1981, but even for 2003 Summary: 5 Stars
BEAU-PERE (Stepfather) is a beautifully woven story of love that just happens to touch on the aspect of an older man falling in love with a fourteen year old girl - and his step-daughter at that! Remi (Patrick Dewaere) is a salon piano player, narrating how lonely is that life, that it keeps him apart from his fashion model wife Martine(Nicole Garcia). The superimposed distance of their careers leads them to the brink of separation when suddenly Martine is killed in an auto accident. This leaves the Remi to care for his 14 year old stepdaughter Marion (a radiant Ariel Besse). She wants to continues living with Remi instead of her biologic father who is an alcoholic and cold man. In the end Marion admits her love for Remi, lives with him as a lover, and eventually grows into the streams that life unfolds: Remi evetually falls in love with a painist his own age and Marion accepts here real father as the one who is more needy of her afection. Though the term "pedophilia" could be applied here, it is so gently and sophistcated captured that it seems as natural as Remi and Marion feel. The cast (including the the stil lovely Nathalie Baye) is uniformly excellent and Bertrand Blier has created a timeless movie that bears repeated watching.
Movie Review: Dewaere & Blier In Superb Form Summary: 5 Stars
Patrick Dewaere, the male lead of this film, died young with not that many films under his belt. If you never had the pleasure of seeing him, make the time to see this one, perhaps his finest. The director, Bertrand Blier, possesses a rather uneven ouevre of film but this too is one of his best. When Blier is good, he is very, very good indeed. The next best facet to this film is the freshness of its script. It tackles a difficult subject very well. Dewaere's wife dies and as the surviving stepparent, he becomes the guardian for her teenage daughter. One thing leads to another and, next thing, they are having an affair. I think the power of this film comes from its tapping into what must be a deeply buried but "there" fantasy of what it would be like to find oneself in this situation. Certainly it helps that the two principals are very attractive which would not often be the case in real life. I found it absolutely riveting viewing and highly recommend it.
Movie Review: Edited but still a tear-jerker Summary: 5 Stars
I saw the original European version and this has most of the film but had a bad edit toward the end in a very emotional scene between Remi and Marion. Apparently, the full frontal nudity of Ariel Besse was too much for the US censors, regardless of the importance of the lines to the plot. The picture and sound quality are great but the subtitles were off by a scene or two in the middle. Not sure if this was the disc or my laptop. Regardless, I enjoyed the movie for what it is, the story of the death of a mother, a teen girl's first love and the unfortunate schmuck of a step-father that is the target of her attention. Yes, there is nudity but the emotional upheavals of the main characters are the important issues in the movie. The acting is excellent.
Movie Review: A Must Have!!! Summary: 5 Stars
This movie definetly belongs in your collection if you are a big fan of Lolita-type movies! I am going to make my review SHORT and TO THE POINT!Acting was Excellent...Soundtrack was very beautifull...Story and plot was highly entertaining and kept your interest...The girl was very cute, adorable, and a great actress. Who cares about the age of the guy--it was such a great love story! And it gives hope! The chemistry between the main characters was very REAL and believable! DVD.THE WORST PART: My only complaint is the somewhat sad ending.BUY IT!!!!!
