Movie Review: SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE TRAILER WOULD LEAD YOU TO BELIEVE!
Summary: 4 Stars

I have been anticipating this DVD release for some time now. I have HDNET and I watch the Trailer Show all the time. This was a favorite trailer for the producer's of the show and I saw it a lot and often. I'm a Jack Black fan and even though it looked goofy, I knew I would be eventually seeing this movie!

The film has a bizarre premise, but it's not nearly as goofy as I would have thought. Don't get me wrong, this is a Jack Black movie and Black is hilarious as the town wacko! Mos Def is equally funny as the well meaning video store manager and Danny Glover, Mia Farrow and a cast of ordinary people turn in excellent performances as well.

Film buffs will get a kick out of the home made versions of the films these guys try to replace after all the VHS tapes in their failing video store get erased by Black accidently. What could have been just another ridiculous vehicle that goes nowhere, turns out to be a warm and funny little film. These are ordinary people that do something extraordinary without knowing it and that is why this film is so uplifting and inspired! I found myself caring about their plight even though the film has some ludicrous situations. Kind of like the movie 'Blast From The Past'.

I wish they would have included the full versions of the little films they made in the movie on the DVD as they are available to watch on the website, but it's a minor quibble and I enjoyed this film a lot!

Movie Review: Funny and unassuming.
Summary: 4 Stars

As I started this movie, I was a bit confused. Was it a comedy or a drama? That's why it didn't really catch me in the beginning. But, what was funny was the concept of remaking the movies that got erased. It became funny once they started "shooting" Ghostbusters. One of my all time favorite movies!! The fact that they hit a lot of parts of Ghostbusters was funny. This movie kind of brings you back to the days where video tape was king!!! None of this DVD stuff. Which they make a reference to the DVD as starting to take over the market. This movie, once it caught momentum, really turned out to be funny. Especially when they began shooting "Rush Hour 2" and need to film a scene where Jackie Chan, played by Jack Black, had to kiss the villain, who was their mechanic. Which is a guy!! He didn't want anything to do with the scene and quit. Saying, "You guys gotta find someone else". They ended up finding a girl to play the parts of the women in their movies. And their little projects just cranked up and it was funny!!!

If you want a movie that doesn't try to hard in the laughs department, yet makes you laugh just out of being silly, then this movie is one for you. I recommend you watch this movie with a group of people who enjoy the older movies like, Robocop, Ghostbusters, Rush Hour, Men in Black, etc. These movies were the ones they had to redo. Very funny.

Movie Review: Funny and Sweet
Summary: 4 Stars

Its premise is daffy -- a disturbed video store employee (Jack Black) tries to blow up a local power plant and instead ends up demagnetizing every film in the video store at which he works, causing he and his very talented friend (Mos Def) to attempt to avoid the wrath of their boss, Danny Glover, by re-shooting every Hollywood and foreign flim of the last 30 years. But the film is more than that. Jack and Mos end up getting everybody in the neighborhood: the girl who works at a nearby cleaners (Melonie Diaz), the kids at the park, neighbors and friends, doing everything from pouring powdered mashed potatoes to evoke a blizzard, to stealing trains, to accomplish some of the most iconic scenes in recent cinema. Good natured ties are born, a community. It isn't sappy; the relations seem natural and organic. And a subtle supporting role by Mia Farrow, and the sweet, respectful tone of the film (I can't think of a mainstream comedy in the last 5 years so genteel) make it unique and bittersweet, as there is no pat, happy ending.

Movie Review: wacky, funny & surprisingly touching
Summary: 4 Stars

It's not a secret I have a soft spot for (in order): Mos Def, Michel Gondry and Jack Black. I read the middling reviews of Be Kind Rewind, and I had moderate expectations. The film is slow to start. When it does pick up, it's delightful, witty and surprisingly poignant. By embracing the ridiculous, yet brilliant plot, the film manages to plausibly straddle the line between preposterous and believable.

It's refreshing to see Jack Black do comedy and drama; it helps restrain his wackiness into something more endearing. Danny Glover and Mia Farrow were fantastic. In this all-star cast, relative newcomer Melonie Diaz gave the best performance. I plan to make a point to see more of her films soon.

This movie delivers many laughs and quite a few tears. It's definitely worth seeing. Even though it's perhaps not brilliant filmmaking, it is unique, refreshing, entertaining and touching. If I had the power to edit out the boring beginning and elongate the last hour, I would.

Movie Review: Gung-ho comedies
Summary: 4 Stars

Elroy (Danny Glover) temporarily entrusts his rundown New Jersey VHS video store into the hands of Mike (Mos Def), whose pal, Jerry (Jack Black), unintentionally brings the business into near complete disarray. Together, Mike and Jerry - with the eventual help of enthusiastic VHS devotees among locals -, they find a way to make good, irresistibly so that the audience willingly suspends disbelief. In writer-director Michel Gondry's 'Be Kind Rewind' lives the best tradition of American movies about the never-say-die spirit of pride, identity and comradery. It matters not that issues such as the threatened enforcement of city ordinances are not fully resolved. Excellent cast: Mos Def is (perish the thought) endearing; Glover provides solid grounding to the tale; Jack Black greatly redeems himself from recent career misjudgments, with Mia Farrow and Sigourney Weaver making great cameos. A top-flight comedy from director Gondry.
