Movie Reviews of Be Kind RewindMovie Review: Come on... Summary: 5 Stars
I've never seen a movie where the reviewers don't realise they are talking about themselves as much as the movie... Watch it and see which group you fit into, ie whether you have any affection for the world around you, or whether you evince your misanthropy with prolonged gurgling criticisms on websites. At risk of sounding pugnacious, what's not to like about this film? When younger, I'd get together with some mates and make crap short movies. There was rarely a plot, never a script and it was the most fun I've ever had... especially the moments when by pure accident you'd stumble on some cheap but brilliant 'special' effect. And sometimes, the final product would surprise everyone. 'Be Kind Rewind' is about that fun and that surprise, which I think is unique to film as a collaborative medium. This film actually tries to show you something important... Contrast this to the majority of Hollywood's output, which boils down to narrative cliches in support of a marketable gimmick.
This may not be Gondry's best film whatever that means, but his integrity as a film maker is well intact and I don't think I've experienced such visual flair since Jacques Tati's Playtime.
Movie Review: Quirky, and I like it Summary: 5 Stars
Be Kind, Rewind [Theatrical Release]
What a fun film. Give up on traditional film viewing judgments and take a fanciful, amusing ride through a stream of funny ideas. The movie parodies are hilarious. Some of Jack Black's antics are predictable, but still amusing. Mos Def does a great job being the determined, responsible shop manager. Alma is a surprising treat.
I did feel that the end was a little maudlin, but not too badly so.
Most importantly, this movie subtly introduces a theme that is surprising to find in a commercial movie: the movie industry's idiotic Intellectual Property war. The response by the citizens of the town is to make their own art that represents their culture and that includes them in the production. There is no preaching about it, no soap-boxing, just a grassroots response to a need for entertainment and identity. Brilliant. Maybe I like it too much because of that shift in perspective that it introduces without ceremony, but I think it is important.
Movie Review: "Because We're Ghostbusters!" Summary: 5 Stars
This film is everything I expected from the preview, off-base comedy derived from silly interpetations of classic films...with heart.
I almost didn't rent it after the guy at Blockbuster said it wasn't really a "comedy", but he was WRONG! This movie is hilarious! It's more along the lines of Napoleon Dynamite where there are no set-ups or punchlines, the humor is in the quirkiness of the characters and their attitudes.
The "Sweded" movie parodies featuring Jack Black and Mos Def are where the real laughs come from, especially when they just slightly tweak lines and situations from Ghostbusters and Rush Hour 2. This mixed with the characters' faux bad acting and innocence really ups the giggle factor. Mia farrow is also funny as a very realistic weird neighborhood lady who we've all run into at the bank or the supermarket before.
I bought it, you should buy it, your family should buy it and then get one for the dog.
Movie Review: Movie-Fan's Gold Summary: 5 Stars
The generic plot: a run-down neighborhood video store is going to be forced to close if the owner (Danny Glover) can't come up with $60,000 to upgrade.
Accompanying problem: Jerry (Jack Black) demagnetizes the entire stores VHS tapes.
Solution: Jerry and Mike (Mos Def) shoot low-budget versions of hit films to replace the longer and less-entertaining real versions. This becomes known as 'Sweding.'
Opinion: A very funny movie is the result. The sweded versions of the movies are a riot, and Jerry as Miss Daisy is especially riotous. A couple of the scenes feel like they don't belong, but overall this is an outstanding film for lovers of movies.
If you enjoyed Clerks II, you should enjoy this.
