Movie Review: BattlePlans open to all.
Summary: 5 Stars
BattlePlan is a unique series, examining the actual tactics and plans commanders use, and have used in the 20th century. Consisting primarly of narration, backed by simple detailed visuals, interview snippets with military experts and two historical examples, each episode is about an hour long. The information provided is impressively complete for such a drawn back view of historical events. Of particular note is the essay style summery near the end of each episode, which goes back over each point in turn, showing how each example delt with that point and the consiquences. At the end of each episode is a breif speculation on the future for the battleplan in question to wrap up events. The series only had one season, and as such this DVD collection has the entirety. The 16 episodes cover everything from the massive scale plans like Assault from the Sea, to smaller scale actions like Special Forces operations. The plain language used, relavent examples, and measured scholarly presentation make this a suprisingly acessable series. Someone who wanted to know about the six day war for example, could refer to the episode on Preemptive Strike, and see a unique prespective, without needing prior military knowladge. Not designed to be as flashy in presentation as a series like 'Battles B.C.' BattlePlan stands on the pillars of clean presentation, complete accurate facts, and acessablity to everyone.
The only flaws in the presentation is the use of Double Sided DVDs, which can be a nightmare to keep clean, and a lack of chapters on the DVD's, with only 3 for a given 1 hour episode. Some facial tissue and use of the fastforward or rewind functions easily mitigates both.
Overall, I would recommend this to anyone who wishes to better understand why the military operates they way they see them on television, especially the episode on Gurilla Warfare. To students, this is a great option for finding examples of both sucessful and failed uses of battleplans. To the military enthusiast, here is a series that takes the matter seriusly without engaging in political correctness. It equally critises Natzi Germany and the Allies for their failings, a rare thing in historical documentarys.
