Movie Reviews of Battle of Britain

Movie Review: A masterpiece
Summary: 5 Stars

One of the greatest warfilms of all time along side the Dambusters and the Cruel sea. Made in 1969 Director Guy Hamilton (007) delivers an airborne masterpiece. Unlike most of the mid-air films of its day most (if not all) of the planes were either taken out of museums or built replicas. It would have cost a fortune, but obviously Hamilton thought if you are going to do something, you may as well do it properly. Some of the worlds greatest actors like Michael Caine (Alfie), Christopher Plummer (The sound of music), Laurence Olivier (A bridge too far), Harry Andrews (633 squadron), Michael Redgrave (Dambusters) and many more deliver a wonderful performance which truely makes this film one of the greatest movies ever made.

Movie Review: Battle of Britain DVD
Summary: 5 Stars

Hey, so what it is a weak plot--this is the flyboy's documentary of WW II Spitfire pilots vs. the Luftwaffe...
I picked up the DVD at the supermarket check-out counter and could not believe it has come down to this. A discount DVD of one of the great flying theatricals of all time! And flown by the guys who were in actual aerial combat with each other at the this historic crossroad. It is also surprising to see so many actors who were young then, and have become far more accomplished and famous since, in this early movie. I flew Huey's in the Mekong Delta and I am still awaiting filming of that aviation moment. My book, OUTLAWS IN VIETNAM, will have to suffice until then...! I am glad to possess this piece.

Movie Review: An Israeli Pilot Fought for Britain ???
Summary: 5 Stars

Yes this is a terrific movie, especially the dog
fight scenes. This movie shows how Britain was
really hanging on by her fingertips.
What I also found interesting was after the movie was over, they showed a list of allied
pilots who flew for Britain. They had a column for the number of pilots from each country ,the country they came from and lastly the number killed in battle. The very last pilot was one single Israeli who fought and was NOT killed in battle.
Who was this guy and how did he end up fighting
alongside the British. What happened to him.
Does anybody have any info?

Movie Review: Outstanding Aerial footage and well acted.
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a particular affinity for this particular film having been brought up in the UK during the war, losing and Father and an Uncle in that war, coming to America and growing up further. I served the US Forces for 23 years. During that tenure I tried to live up to that of my ancestors. I can remember as a child the blackouts and running to the Bomb Shelter whilst the Luftwaffe flew overhead. I can remember one time my father shooting up into the sky with a pellet gun. Not that it helped much I suppose that it was a gesture of defiance. Or if anything a morale booster to the others about us.

Movie Review: Great, but it misses "the greatest" mark.
Summary: 5 Stars

There is much attention to detail, such as the great war-planes, and the strategy. But it misses the "time-stamp". You are left wondering what time-span is represented through the movie. (FEEDBACK FROM JBGOOD: "occurred from late June thru September 1940")
Also, some significant events, such as Dunkirk, are only briefly mention or shown, causing the viewer to miss it's significance. If you research the battle of England at your own, you will understand and enjoy the movie much more. In perspective, it is a great movie that misses the opportunity to be the greatest war-movie.
