Movie Reviews of Battle of BritainMovie Review: Battle of Britain revisited Summary: 5 Stars
This film is a superlative memorial to those men of both sides that participated in the epic fight over the skies of Great Briatain and the English Channel back in 1940. At the time this film was made, the producers had spent several years scouring The British Isles and the Continent for flyable aircraft that were appropriate for the period, a daunting task. That they found over 50 servicable planes to use in flying and static scenes is all the more remarkable. They were able to film on location at some of the original RAF bases with the cooperation of the Ministry of Defense. The cast is stellar, and the film's language and presentation is authentic for the period. Special effects are state of the art for the time, and are impressive in that context. I watch the film annually on the anniversary of the BOB. There used to be a gathering at the old Reggie's Pub at the Omni complex in Atlanta on the same day, and you'd meet veterans from both sides there most years. This film honors them all.
Movie Review: Fantastic aerial combat!! Famous actors and good story! Summary: 5 Stars
The Battle of Britain was a critical phase of World War Two. Adolf Hitler's military might was ready to invade Great Britain and if not for the couragous Royal Air Force, Hitler might have been marching on Westminster Abbey in 1940 or 1941. The movie "The Battle Of Britain" shows both the R.A.F. and the German Luftwaffe squaring off with each other. Excellent aerial photography, and my hats are off to those professional/amateur aviators who spent many hours recreating combat over the skies of Great Britain.Famous stars abound in this movie, from Sir Lawrence Oliver, Michael Caine, Robert Shaw, Susannah York, Kurt Jurgens, and many others boost up an average storyline, to make this a classic film. I don't know of any other film that documented the Battle of Britain in fiction based on fact to this scale. Filmed in 1970, the digital remake of the film is quite good. What an action packed and great fun film this is. Highly recommended!!
Movie Review: Why would anyone watch this movie? Summary: 5 Stars
A. Incredible WWII Aircraft (they went to alot of trouble to get these planes, some found in Spain). B. Great depiction of the air battles. C. Wonderful job of portraying officers and enlisted men at leisure and in battle. D. Even in this age of CGI the F/X of this movie still stand up nicely. E. To annoy those that don't appreciate this movie.I'm a Yank and I love this movie! This is one of the many wonderful WWII movies the British have produced. I am a big fan of WWII movies and this is one of the best available. Call me slightly prejudiced but their portrayals are more realistic to me than many of our American made war movies. Don't get me wrong I love John Wayne too, but the Duke was larger than life. Another good example of the Brits abilities is "Sink the Bismarck". Talk about an exceptional movie. So I suggest all my fellow Yanks catch this movie, and my hats off to the Brits for making it.
Movie Review: A great movie with minimal melodrama, and a great cast. Summary: 5 Stars
When I first bought this low-priced DVD I thought I would get a sub-standard depiction of the greatest air battle ever. I was pleasantly surprised. I was expecting "card-board" action from a period film (1969). In fact, the air action is very realistic, no doubt achieved through the genius of Bond filmmaker Harry Saltzmann. I also commend the lack of melodrama (notwithstanding the romantic interlude between Susannah York and Christopher Plummer). The use of minimal music and periods of silence gives the movie yet another dimension of reality. The DVD is also minimal and doesn't go into the usual "making-of" documentary, which is understandable given it's low-price. But the widescreen aspect ratio and excellent video transfer makes up for it. All in all, a great movie and a good DVD.
Movie Review: Absolutely Smashing, Old Chap! Summary: 5 Stars
With today's movies having such a large amount of computer generated special effects, this movie was a refreshing change. I am an avid WW2 history buff and love the aircraft of WW2. Even though you are watching the Spanish Air Force versions of the He111 and the Me109, it was still a thrill to see images of the real thing in flight. While the plot, or lack of it, leaves a something to be desired, you do get the feeling of a beleagured RAF fighting against bad odds. I'm the kind of viewer who fast forwards through the romance scenes in "Top Gun", so I can watch the aircraft in action. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and I think its a must see for WW2 and aircraft buffs, regardless of what more "discerning" viewers have said about it.
