Movie Reviews of *Batteries Not Included

Movie Review: A sci-fi movie with heart
Summary: 5 Stars

In these days of CG-filled sci-fi movies with no soul (I'm thinking of Avatar here...), I've found myself increasingly going back to the 80s and rediscovered this classic. *Batteries Not Included features robotic aliens helping out residents in a poor neighborhood about to be condemned. All of the characters are unique and lovable in their own, flawed way. The aliens are both adorable and mysterious - an odd combination. Best of all, the special effects still hold up surprisingly well. The ships look pretty realistic.

*Batteries Not Included is what sci-fi should be - fun, original, and with special effects that last the ages.

Movie Review: Enchanting movie
Summary: 5 Stars

As I told my kids about this movie I once saw about those cuddly little flying saucers, they were immediately keen to watch it. Seeing it for the second time after all these years, I enjoyed it even more than back then. Superficially, it is a well-constructed plot about the good guys and the bad guys, where the good guys get some unexpected help. Only the good guys are not the run-of-the-mill type young and good-looking heroes, but elderly and suffering from Alzheimer's disease, poor, a pregnant single mother to be, a mute ex-boxing champ, or a frustrated artist. Even the main bad-guy character is blessed with depth of character. Several subtle sub-plots turn the story into a sympathetic statement about human dignity. The superb acting of particularly Jessica Tandy adds a magical touch. The little UFO's were even better than I remembered. It must have been great fun to make this movie.

Movie Review: We love this movie!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have begun looking at some of the movies I loved as a kid and trying to share them with my kids. We had family movie night and I had to drag them in kicking and screaming. Twenty minutes into the movie, I tried to pause the movie while I went potty, and got a rebellion. My three daughters were hooked. My nine year old talked about the cute little robots for months and wanted to know if there were any more of the movies. My oldest (sixteen) was right in on all of the conversations. Even the too cool for the rest of us 15 year old loved it....although we were never allowed to speak of it in public.
Since then they ask me if I know of any other cool movies from when I was a kid. I have a long list, although this one is on the short list for Christmas presents this year.

Movie Review: Science fiction aids humans
Summary: 5 Stars

*Batteries Not Included A very good movie for the whole family. I also enjoyed the science fiction element introduced into the movie. It has just the right mix of comedy with seriousness to make the movie enjoyable to everyone. I enjoy movies with a positive motive which highlights a mixture of old people with young people. The janitor has more of a childish attitude toward life which helps to make the movie help involve all ages of the audience. It centers around an elderly couple whose apartmenthouse is in the middle of an area being demolished for the erection of a new skyscraper. Small spaceships arrive to help rebuild the apartment house after it is destroyed by fire.

Movie Review: A Masterpiece for Children and the Young at Heart
Summary: 5 Stars

Spielberg's movies are typically epic in proportion - in contrast to his other movies this special effects masterpiece is aimed at children and the young at heart perfectly targeting its audience with its almost perfect execution, its intimate scale and proportion. Folks this is a miniature and like most miniatures its a jewel. Faberge meets children's science fiction. Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy are delightful, playing themselves in the sunset of their life in love in a condemned tenement in New York. A modern updating of the fairy tale about the impoverished cobbler who is rescued by fairies (miniature flying saucers) - charming, touching, lovely.
