Movie Review: A notch below the regular series

Being a big fan of The Batman regular series, I had been anxiously awaiting watching this for quite some time. Unfortunately after only a few minutes of viewing, things just didn't seem right, with the entire mood and tone feeling different, and not in a positive way. It immediately reminded me of a modern movie based on an older TV show, which normally lacks the original's style and charm that made it so popular in the first place, only to be left with a shallow shell of its former self. It was even difficult to believe the same creative team and voice actors were involved in this project. Despite the obvious relationship between Batman and Dracula, the overall premise is still a bit too fantastical for a Batman tale, an admittedly surmountable obstacle yet further hindered by weak execution. It also didn't help that the painfully annoying Penguin, and to a lesser extent the Joker, are once again forced into the mix, adding very little to the story and just detracting from a more chilling atmosphere that should have been employed. Man-bat would have been a better fit, but alas he doesn't have the same star power. This type of tale can be effectively done, the zany zombie episode from season four being an excellent example, but falls short here. One of the few bright spots was the introduction of Vicky Vale, an intriguing character who would have made an enjoyable addition to the regular series. For many fans, The Batman was a quality cartoon that stood its own against the extremely revered and iconic The Animated Series. Regrettably this movie version of it does not compare as well to its predecessor's stellar equivalent efforts like Sub Zero and Mystery of the Batwoman. Oh well, you can't win `em all.
