Movie Reviews of Barton FinkMovie Review: Tweaked 'til it screams... Summary: 5 Stars
The genius of The Brothers Coen lies in their ability to examine American Culture and tweak it until it screams in transcendent agony, this fine film is no exception. John Turturro, John Goodman, Judy Davis, Steve Buscemi... Imagine their faces, throw in surreal camera-craft, blast them with the contrast of bright Hollywood sunlight and still, deep, dark shadow and you get the idea.
It's set in Hollywood circa the raid on Pearl Harbor. A young and somewhat successful playwright attempts to cope with the coke, booze & benny fueled craziness of the studio. Enter J. Goodman's character: a bona fide psycho, and watch the puzzi get *extra* fancy...
Movie Review: Great follow-up to Miller's Crossing Summary: 5 Stars
Miller's Crossing made me think that the Coens may be the greatest active moviemakers America had to offer. Barton Fink did a lot to confirm that. It's beautiful to look at, and fun to watch, with outstanding performances from the entire cast. John Turturro and John Goodman are both amazing in this. The dialogue is fantastic, although not as wonderfully lyrical as in Miller's Crossing. As with Miller's Crossing, I was hoping for an all-out, deluxe, special edition once this came to DVD. While the extras are nice, I wanted more. Still, the movie looks great, and it's wonderful to finally own it in widescreen.
Movie Review: More Coen Brothers! Summary: 5 Stars
Okay, so I didn't understand everything that happened in Barton Fink, but I enjoyed it none the less. At its core Barton Fink is a running joke about the pretentiousness of art and the substance of creativity. There's a thread of tension that runs from the beginning of this film to its end and maintains your curiosity throughout. With wonderful set direction and cinematography in addition to great acting you don't need to have an analytical understanding of all the components of this film; which is, I think, part of the joke. This is one of the best cinematographic satires of the creative process.
Movie Review: Another Coen Brothers' Masterpiece Summary: 5 Stars
John Turturro is amazing in this wonderful film about a screenwriter in 1940s Hollywood. A scary and mysterious film about a man who "sells his soul" to Hollywood and gets little beyond nightmares in return. A box of nightmares instead of dreams, the writer finds himself in a hellish world where nothing is what it seems and nothing is innocent. I highly recommend this one and would keep myself from knowing too much before the film begins.
Movie Review: Reality and illusion Summary: 5 Stars
I seem to be the only one who sees the film in terms of reality and illusion. From the writer whose secretary writes his books to the guy next store, to the fire in the hall that doesn't burn anyone, nothing is as it seems. And the ending, where he asks the girl "Are you in pictures?" and she responds "Don't be silly", and then she goes into the picture that he's been looking at most of the film, it's all about illusion. I loved it.
