Movie Reviews of Barton Fink

Movie Review: This movie changed me
Summary: 5 Stars

Well, it changed how I see movies at least. Now I know that with beautiful production design, perfectly modulated audio effects and music, and imagination they can completely immerse the viewer in a surreal version of the real world. At least when done properly as the Coen brothers did here. I felt sort of stunned after watching this movie, probably because my mind was still in that onscreen world that Barton Fink was living in. Not to mention, John Goodman's acting is quite awesome, and all the supporting characters seem to add so much to the environment of the film, seeming absurd at times. You can really identify with Fink in his mental quest. Too bad the DVD doesn't include more, it leaves you wondering what the Coen brothers or the actors have to say about. It seems more like an overlooked gem, kind of a demented cousin of Miller's Crossing.

Movie Review: Clifford Odetts=Barton Fink
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a great movie which has as its theme the subversion of purpose by the Hollywood grist-mill and the trouble of screen adaptation from the writer's point of view. The character Barton Fink is based loosely upon the real-life difficulties of playwright Clifford Odets in the world of Hollywood. Jack Lipnick is Louis B. Mayer. W.P. "Bill" Mayhew is William Faulkner. The character of Audrey is most probably a melange of Howard Hawks's real-life script girl Meta Carpenter, with whom Faulkner carried on an intimate relationship, and Leigh Brackett who worked with Jules Furthman to adapt Faulkner's work/dialog for Hawks's movies. Great imagery (the sink drain leading to the drain pipe reminiscient of the flash-back transitions in Edgar Ulmer's "Detour"), damned fine acting and smart dialog as well. Definitely the best of the Coen's.

Movie Review: I'll Show You The Life of the Mind!
Summary: 5 Stars

BF is my favorite Coen brothers movie, eclipsing their other classics - The Big Lebowski, O Brother Where art Thou, and Miller's Crossing. It is surrealism at its best, featuring stellar performances from Turturro, Goodman, and especially Michael Lerner, who plays Mr. Lipnick. BF is in many ways an indictment of the artist: the pompous screenwriter Barton romanticizes the idea of the "common man" but actually has very little in common with him; in fact, he is more or less trapped in his own mind, ultimately requiring horrific acts by a madman to finally break him out of his stupor. This is by far the most analyzed of the Coen's films, precisely because it is the most surreal and metaphorical. For complete enjoyment, it definitely requires a "mindful" viewer.

Movie Review: You don't listen!
Summary: 5 Stars

Barton Fink was a superstar in New York as a playwright so Hollywood snapped him up and put him under contract, despite his gut feeling that this would be selling out his artistic vision. Barton might have been correct to doubt this big break, he gets a nasty case of writers block immediately. Still there is hope. He meets a writer he admires. His hotel neighbor is an insurance salesman aka an "everyman" aka what he feels he writes about the best. Surely they'll help him overcome his issues. Or will they?

If you like happy go lucky movies with simplistic endings that tie everything up neatly, this isn't the movie for you. If you like movies that tend to be darker and make you think and question everything in them, you'll love it.

Movie Review: Don't Know Why, But I Love It.
Summary: 5 Stars

I am a huge Coen Brothers fan, I dont know why I like their films but I find them all entertaining. I guess because you never know whats comming next in a Coen's film because there are so many twists and turns, that you have your eyes glued to the screen all the way through. John Goodman and all the other actors are fantastic, I love the way that Coen Brothers Films use alot of the same actors it alot of their films. Also with Coen Brother's Films you are pritty much gauranteed amazing cinematography. Do I think that the ending left a lot to be desired? Yes. Do I think that the storyline could have been better? Yes. But I still rate it 5 stars. Why? Because I just Love it.
