Movie Reviews of Barbie FairytopiaMovie Review: An awesome movie......with a few drawbacks Summary: 5 StarsI like this movie. It's got more danger in it than some of the newest Barbie movies, and I like that. Elina and her friends are chased by firebirds and fungus. Elina has to get past guards and other obstacles. It has a lot of self sacrifice and and doing things for those you care about. There is some humor and the animation is beautiful. (I recall reading one interview that said the animation looked half-done. Their favorite Barbie movie is "the Nutcracker", in which the story is absolutely beautiful but the animation is pathetic!) However, there's a couple of things I didn't like. 1: Elina and Nalu's little... 'relationship'. It's so ridiculous! They hold hands as he pulls her through the water and they look all dove-eyed into each other's faces and smile and then when they have to leave, Nalu grabs her hand and says, "Be safe. I hope we meet again." He swims off and leaves Elina smiling and looking fondly in his direction. And I'm like, "What?!?!?!?" In Mermaidia, he's in love with Nori! Is it just me, or is this Prince Nalu a womanizer???? 2:The two happy trolls who rhyme all the time bug me. They're a major marketing ploy. They're irritating and there because they'll be another thing to sell. And they are ugly, big-eyelashed dwarfs who act all sweet and innocent and smile one-toothed simles. They get on Elina's nerves a little, but not enough. Not the way they would in real life.
Overall, though, I really like this movie. Once I was past the totally random Prince Nalu part, this was an awesome movie and I loved it.
Summary of Barbie FairytopiaBarbie stars as Elina in her first-ever Fairytopia movie. Come join Elina and discover a magical new land filled with fairies, flowers, and enchanting experiences! She summons the courage to help and embarks on a fantastic journey to find Azura, a fairy guardian she thinks can solve the problem. What Elina doesn't know is that the evil Laverna has caused the flying sickness as part of her plan to take power from the Enchantress, ruler of Fairytopia! Elina's journey, on the back of a giant and beautiful butterfly named Hue, takes her to strange and beautiful places. She meets new people who test her courage and teach her the value of true friendship. But can a young, wingless fairy save all of Fairytopia? Bravery, commitment to friendship, and personal sacrifice empower the weak and give rise to unlikely heroes in the magical world of Fairytopia. Elina (played by Barbie) is a wingless fairy who is mercilessly teased by a trio of spiteful fairies. Luckily for Elina, Dandelion (a fellow fairy) and Bibble (a cute little puffball) are good, supportive friends. When the evil Laverna plots to take over Fairytopia and spreads a potion that causes an epidemic of flying sickness in Fairytopia, Elina is the only fairy not overcome with the illness. It's up to Elina, Bibble, and new friend Hue to find a way to defeat Laverna and save Fairytopia from ruin. While the brightly colored animation of Fairytopia is enticing and the messages of friendship and sacrifice wholesome, the story line and characters are shallow and predictable. Worse yet, the colloquial dialogue and prepubescent attitude of many of the characters is downright annoying. While young Barbie fans will doubtless enjoy Fairytopia, Barbie Princess and the Pauper, Barbie Nutcracker, and Barbie Swan Lake offer richer story lines with better developed and more likeable characters. On a technical note, the DVD played fine on three test DVD players (Sony and Panasonic). (Ages 3 to 9) --Tami Horiuchi
