I liked this rip-roaring western. James Stewart, Dean Martin & Raquel Welch were great as was George Kennedy.
Movie Review: How to survive dust and grit and still be couffed Summary: 4 Stars
Love the movie...Great Acting...Loved James Stewart & Deano...I even thought Raquel did a good acting job and everyone else carried the movie...EXCEPT....This is THE ONLY THING THAT BUGGED ME ABOUT THIS MOVIE...Now a days women are playing grittier type roles and aren't afraid to look messed up (LOOK at the
"LOST TV Show" women for example)....imagine riding for days and days in the old west desert w/ no bathroom....sleeping on a hard ground....no soap to clean up/ NO DEODORANT..no HAIR SPRAY!....No EYE MAKEUP or even a MIRROR to apply the makeup and who has time for that when you are being held hostage ridng a dusty horse...NO BATHROOMS to freshen up....And did I even see a bra strap through her blouse in back?....Where was the corset?.....And don't get me started on the perfect white fingernail polish and light lipstick....Where did that come from in the untamed west?....If you can remember the 60's Carnaby St...white fingernail polish and light lipstick were the rage and false eyelashes....Sorry i can't get behind the ratted up, hair sprayed big hair....Were there varmints living in there?...Maybe after a week on the trail and sleeping on the ground some would crawl in there and she didn't have time to grab a brush and comb from her home before she was dragged away by the bad guys....A seasoned actress would have realized this scenario and would have insisted on looking realistic in the old west....Raquel would have been more beautiful if she were natural without the major eyeliner, perfect makeup and more messed up hair...even when she cried in the end, not one streak down her cheek from all that makeup....All this did not give Raquel credibility as a good serious actress...She played her part well (One of her better acting roles)...Can we stand to remember Mother, Jugs, and Speed movie? SORRY....this gives the movie some low points....
Movie Review: Very good western with excellent cast Summary: 4 Stars
Bandolero! is a very good western that never slows down from beginning to end. This may seem like your typical western but it is a step above the rest. After the Civil War, two brothers are reunited on opposite sides of the law. Mace pretends to be a hangman to save his brother and his gang for robbing a bank. After saving them from certain death, Mace and Dee race south with a posse close after them. Along the way, they take along a rich widow whose husband was killed in the attempted bank robbery. The posse follows the gang into Mexico and "territorio bandolero", bandit country. This is a very exciting western with plenty of action. Much of the movie was shot at John Wayne's Alamo Village in Brackettvile, Texas which is very notable in the final shootout. Very good western that is well worth a watch. James Stewart and Dean Martin are very good together as Mace and Dee Bishop, who were on different sides in the Civil War, but now must work together. Raquel Welch plays rich widow, Maria Stoner, who is the love interest of several characters. Her Spanish accent is questionable, but who really cares? George Kennedy is also good as Sheriff July Johnson, the leader of the posse. The movie also stars Andrew Prine, Harry Carey JR, Rudy Diaz, Denver Pyle, and Dub Taylor. The DVD offers a great looking widescreen presentation, two theatrical trailers for Bandolero!, and five other trailers from Raquel Welch movies. For a very good western with a great cast and plenty of action, check out Bandolero!
Movie Review: Pretty good Western from 1968 with Raquel Welch in full flower - good acting from James Stewart, Dean Martin, and George Kennedy Summary: 4 Stars
While principally a vehicle for the 24-year-old sensation Raquel Welch, this movie has a very strong cast and very good acting for what could have been a toss-off Western. The movie opens in a way that you might not expect, and Jimmy Stewart is especially strong in the way he gives his character life. Notice the subtlety of his reaction shots or the way he as the hangman tells the prisoner Mace Bishop (Dean Martin in a strong role for him) that he must have made his mother proud. Watch his eyes and hear the way he shapes the words. Quite powerfully done.
Raquel plays Maria Stoner, the widow of a man that Mace Bishop (Dean Martin) killed. As Mace and the others escape their hanging they flee the town and overtake the widow (Welch) returning to her ranch and take her hostage and fell to Mexico. A relationship between Mace and the widow Stoner develops. However, the sheriff (George Kennedy) is quite taken with the widow Stoner (as is every male on planet earth) and hopes to save her and make her his. So, he pursues the criminals into Mexico.
The problem is the Bandoleros (bandits) that prey on people traveling through their desert lands. Eventually, there is a huge conflict in which all is resolved nobly, if not the way a happy ending would have preferred.
While not a great movie, it is a pretty good late Western that turned some of its conventions around, but kept the underlying principles in tact.
Movie Review: The Mild Bunch Summary: 4 Stars
An earlier band of bank robbing killers head to Mexico in this anti-heroic Western. But don't look for the operatic perversity of Leone or the nihilism of Peckinpah, just the expert craftsmanship of the underrated helmer Andrew V. McLaglen. The picture is very tightly edited and the shots are neatly framed and can be savored on this well restored DVD. The film's first section with Jimmy in a stovepipe hat is priceless. After that he steps back to play matchmaker to Dean and Raquel, although he does have one terrific bit where he freaks out with self-righteousness that is perfectly played. (And I'm not sure where else you can see him rob banks and shoot it out with the law.) George Kennedy is also very good as the stalwart lawman who carries an improbable torch for la Welch.
