Movie Reviews of Bad News Bears (Widescreen Edition)Movie Review: Funnier Than the Original Summary: 5 Stars
"Bad News Bears" is a remake of the 1976 Walter Matthau/Tatum O'Neal film which stars Billy Bob Thorton (Bad Santa), Greg Kinnear (Stuck on You), and Marcia Gay Harden (Mystic River). Richard Linklater, director of
"School of Rock" and "Dazed and Confused" directs; And the original screenwriter Bill Lancaster and "Bad Santa" writers Glenn Ficarra & John Requa write. Thorton stars as Morris Buttermaker, a former Mariners player who is now an exterminator killing rats to pay rent on a trailer. a group of players who weren't wanted by the other teams. Buttermaker is inspired to win when he meets the rival coach Roy Bullock (Greg Kinnear) and recruits his ex-girlfriend's daughter Amanda (Sammi Kane Kraft, who fails to catch the vulnerable-yet-touch charm Tatum O'Neal presented in the original) and the local "bad-a$$" Kelly Leak to help win the championship. The fact is, the original movie is the first movie in a series of sports films that have the same plot and story (The most recent have been "Kicking & Screaming" and "Rebound") but with Thorton and the raw attitude this movie and the original has, these films are easily the best of those. Thorton was perfect to replace Matthau and Ficarra & Requa were perfect to write the script. They're faithful to the original story, but add their own brand of crude humor to make the movie appeal to a broader audience. A-
