Movie Reviews of Bad LieutenantMovie Review: Flawed but compelling Summary: 4 Stars
The Bottom Line:
No will is going to accuse Abel Ferrera's Bad Lieutenant of being a perfect film, but as a depiction of a man wallowing in the depths and as showcase for Harvey Keitel's soul-baring performance it succeeds enough to make up for its lack of structure (though the baseball motif is handled very well) and occasional flashes of exploitation; it's not an "enjoyable" film per se, but it's a worthy one.
3/4
Movie Review: Redemption story not for the faint of heart Summary: 4 Stars
Keitel give a powerful, brave performance in this story of one of the most loathesome characters I've ever seen on screen. Name the vice, this guy's got it. It's rated NC-17 with good reason, and after you are plunged into his dark world, the redeptive power of religion helps you and him get through.
Movie Review: RATINGS GOOF Summary: 4 Stars
I love this very, very dark film. But this is merely a correction. The Lionsgate rating is NC 17 not "R" as Amazon lists it. Meaning that all the sex, doping and Keitel's private parts are on healthy display.
Movie Review: Great Movie!!!! Summary: 4 Stars
Harvey Keitel is the consummate corrupt cop who gets his come-upance in the end. I really enjoyed this movie. It's a must have for movie collectors.
Movie Review: Depravity & Forgiveness Summary: 3 Stars
*** This comment may contain spoilers ***
Human beings don't come much worse than this New York City police officer, played by Harvey Keitel, an actor who has never cared who he offended in any role or never backed off from a challenging role.
Keitel reaches new depths of depravity in this role, which you can see in either an R-rated or a NC-17 rated version. (This disc is rated R.), At least Keitel's immoral character repents near the end, hallucinating that he sees Jesus and begging for forgiveness. As bad as he is, he's always aware of his sins. Speaking of forgiveness, there is a nun in this movie who gives a demonstration of forgiveness that is astounding and is a great "witness" to the "bad lieutenant."
I did get one big laugh out one scene in the film, the one where Keitel loses a big baseball bet and shoots his car radio in frustration. I know a lot sports bettors who know the feeling.
Thus, even though the movie is extremely sordid, there are some a few very redeeming qualities here. It's a unique story so, you decide, as long as you know what to expect.
