Movie Review: Stunning

Harvey Keitel gives a searing performance as the Lieutenant, a thoroughly corrupted and evil human being who abuses his power, himself, and those around him in equal measure. He clearly loathes what he has become but knows no other way to be. As the film opens, he appears to be the final stages of an extended suicide by lifestyle-he is constantly ingesting drugs and increasing the amount of his losing bet on the World Series to underworld thugs who are fully prepared to kill him for welshing on his gambling debts. When a raped nun refuses to reveal the identity of her attackers because she has forgiven them, the Lieutenant, a very lapsed Catholic, is stunned by this act of absolution and begins to long for some form of redemption for himself.This powerful film is essentially plotless. We are forced to wallow in the Lieutenant's degrading world; many scenes that detail his transgressions go on longer than they would in most films. But all of this is presented in service of the Lieutenant's final act, a bid to be worthy of forgiveness that is provocative and faithful to his character. This is one of the most interesting and serious films on the subject of spiritual salvation that I have ever seen.
Movie Review: Keitel's best performance

Only an actor of Keitel's incredible talent can take a character that you don't know whether to hate or pity , that has only bad qualities, goes on an endless spree of degenerate gambling, drug use, sexual devient behavior and police corruption and make them 100% believable and engaging. You can really picture LT as a real person who has lived the way he does in the movie for a long time and is finally hitting comlete rock bottom. A truly masterful performance. Anyone who has known someone whose life is spiraling downward due to addiction can understand the excellent portrayal and the final price LT pays is the unfortunate end that the real world dishes out 95% of the time. This movie doesn't have an incredibly complex plot or meaning but I would somerize the meaning to me as forgiveness for some people can only come after death because there isn't much forgiveness in the real world for the truly lost soul. Bad Lieutenant (he is never given a name) is a truly bad person who no matter how hard they try can not change due to weakness and he pays the price for his weakness. I am reviewing this because I am a guy that likes Bad Cop/Good Cop movies. With this movie, "The Bad Lieutenant" it's from the same director that did, "King of New York" Which was one of my favorite movies of all time.
Bad Lieutenant has a lot of things going for it. It was a very well pace movie, but also savage and sometimes strange. Yes there are some parts in this movie that is kind of a hit and miss, but most its a very good movie that I am glad was made.
If you like these type of movies, the Bad Lieutenant is a good choice for any die hard fan of these movies.
P.S. There is a remake coming in 2009 with Nicolas Cage. Which the director has already said it was not going to be a remake. We'll just have to see and wait.

Forget the Remake! Stick with the original! Kietel is amazing in this film. The remake doesnt even hold a candle to this original. Mostly because Keitel is an original guy, no one in hollywood is quite like him!
This film is definately adult themed on many levels. Its shocking and extreme. Even adults should be cautioned if they cant handle violence, drugs, language etc.
But if you can i really reccomend this movie,. This is a very raw and gritty look at a detectives mistakes and choices.
**but remember not for kids i would say 16+**

Bad Lieutenant is a amazing film Harvey Keitel performance is simply amazing and director Abel Ferrara direction is unique and powerful. This is by far one of the best films of the 90'es it is rated NC-17 and is an adult film and is not for kids. But strong stomic drama fans will enjoy it. The DVD is ok you get the uncut version thats about it. Warning: This Film Contains Extremely Graphic Drug Use Including A Extremely Graphic Rape Sequence Strong Violence And graphic language. This film is for Adults Only
