Movie Reviews of Babel

Movie Review: Definitely worth watching!
Summary: 5 Stars

I heard family and friends say it was boring, that it was horrible, that it wasn't worth watching. I bought it anyway. Great move!

I actually found myself rewinding seconds I missed by turning my head or by being interrupted by one of my furry felines. Every action and every word held my fascinated attention. Completely enthralling! High drama in its very best sense!

Drama, I say again. Yes, this is a story of how one rifle affects the lives of many very different people in many very different ways. The plot veers off into interesting directions and unexpected twists. It's a definite keeper and one I'll enjoy watching again and again.

Not recommended for the young, I think ... no real "action." I'm full-grown and into involving, dramatic storylines. Though I do have to regress momentarily to say I think Brad Pitt looks awesome with some gray streaking his hair! ;-)

Movie Review: NOT a Crash rip-off.
Summary: 5 Stars

BABEL is a great movie. I loved it. Ofcourse opinions are for morons, everyones got one. But here's my two cents. The reason this movie has been getting slammed by the general audience is simply cause Crash stole it's thunder the year before. Dont get me wrong Crash was grea movie too. But both of these movie are nothing alike except for the story telling. Whereas Crash is political, this movie is more on personal family problems. Alejandro González Iñárritu is a great director. Most people aren't aware is of previous work: AMORES PERROS & 21 GRAMS. BABEL is suppose to conclude his 'Death' Trilogy, and I have to say it may not be as heartbreaking as AMORES, but it still delivers. Just becareful cause this is a slow movie and won't play out to wide auidences. Hey same can be said for THE QUEEN, for some reason i dug this movie found the THE QUEEN a complete bore, besides the acting.

Movie Review: An excellent story of miscommunication
Summary: 5 Stars

I thought "Babel" was a story done exceptionally well.
It is actually three stories in one. They appear to be nonrelated, but come together neatly as the story progresses.

One story involves Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchette as Husband and Wife, on a vacation in Morroco, where a terrible accident occurs.
One story involves two young boys who are natives from there.
One story involves a Japenese girl and her search for love/attention,
and yet, another story involves a Hispanic woman in charge of two caucassian children.

All seem a lifetime and a world apart, yet they all connect in an extraordinary way.
Sometimes painful, sometimes very touching.

In my opinion, this movie speaks volumes of how alike we all really are.
Well written, directed, and acted, I thought it to be very entertaining, and give it 5 stars plus.

Movie Review: Communication is a wonderful thing...
Summary: 5 Stars

I liked the film. Previous reviewers have gone on about its virtues (and shortcomings), but I was fascinated about many elements of the film. The time-shifting didn't bother me, since it was necessary for narrative coherence. The acting was fine from everyone, but it's Adriana Barazza who shines the most, in a sincere and heartbreaking performance. I wish the great Robert Altman could've seen this film; he's the guy who invented the multiple character/multiple plot movie, and I'm glad that Altman's influence is alive and well. NOTE: The DVD has absolutely no interesting extras, just a few trailers. UPDATE (12-31-07): I just watched Sr. Inarritu's first film, Amores Perros, and it was better. His subsequent effort, 21 Grams, was also better. I don't think he's progressed at all, given this big Hollywood budget. Those other "small" films were superior.

Movie Review: A Global "Crash"
Summary: 5 Stars

Very strong, well-acted, compelling work which weaves together 4 disparate story-lines a-la 21 Grams (which Inarritu also directed.) If you've seen 21 Grams, or Crash for that matter, and enjoyed them, you will enjoy this one. I would call it a "global-Crash" and it works about as well as that one did within the confines of LA. Babel, as the title somewhat confusedly suggests, is about things that draw humans apart (racism, classism, national suspicion, arbitrary geo-political borders, broken families, distance) and those things which tie us all together in spite of these barriers (family ties, human love and mercy, vows, economic interests, etc.) It's difficult to share how this all plays out without giving away the way in which the 4 stories collide, but suffice it to say that the ending is satisfying and worth the ride. - blogophobe -
