Movie Reviews of BASEketball

Movie Review: easily in my top 10 comedies of all time
Summary: 5 Stars

Seriously, this movie is really hilarious. I like to put it in a category of "films you can't take seriously" along with movies such as "Airplane" and "Mafia." There are lots of scenes in this movie that portray things that obviously wouldn't happen in real life but it's not supposed to matter because it's there for one reason and one reason only: To Make you Laugh!!! (if you are indeed not an uptight a-hole.) If you want to know what I'm talking about, go to the scene with Mr. Denslow and the hot dog and you'll see exactly what I mean. Outside of that, however, is an undeniable sense of intelligence, wit, charisma, and loads of creativity within the minds of Stone and Parker. With this movie, Team America, and even the evolution of South Park, if you watch closely enough you should be able to sense that they're not just a bunch of idiots who write comedy about nothing, there's normally a point. In this film, the point is to poke fun at spots in contemporary America and show that it's really just become all about money, as does many things, and that it's not played for the love of the game anymore, and in this baseketball league, they do their best to not sell out and play simply for the love of the game. But, throughout the movie, they do a lot of things that really have nothing to do with that moral, but are utterly hilarious anyway so it doesn't even matter. That's what I love most about these guys and their movies and show: They seem to have fun doing whatever they're doing at all times!

Movie Review: An unfairly maligned classic
Summary: 5 Stars

I have never, ever laughed so hard in a movie theater as when I went to see this movie, and my friends that I went with were laughing just as hard. Come to think of it, everyone I've known who's seen this film has enjoyed it, although I'll admit that most of those with whom I associate share my somewhat warped sense of humor. Anyway, on to the movie. BASEketball works so well for a simple reason: beneath all the sight gags, sex jokes, pop-culture references, and celebrity cameos (all of which are funny), it is a surprisingly perceptive look at sports in American society. From the opening montage, it is clear that BASEketball is premised upon the commercialization (and some would say corruption) of American sports, setting the stage for its redemption by the starry-eyed fans played by Parker and Stone. This examination of the place sports occupies in the hearts and minds of Americans is what allows BASEketball to transcend the limits of the usual sophomoric comedy fare. If you're a sports fan, and not above laughing at some admittedly juvenile humor, you will have no trouble enjoying this movie.

Movie Review: A DVD Worth Owning
Summary: 5 Stars

Coop (Trey Parker) & Remer (Matt Stone) star in this hilarious comedy. Baseketball, basketball with baseball rules, starts out in their driveway and becomes national sport. Squeak Scolar played by Dian Bahar comes to their house to shut off their gas. He eventually ends up living with them. In Baseketball you can do something called a "Psyche Out" where can you taunt your opponent (no limits). The Psyche Out's are one of the things that makes the movie so funny.

The funniest games they played where against San Francisco and against Texas. For Coop to own the Milwaukee Beers he has to win the Denslow Cup. There is a short, funny segment with Robert Stack from Unsolved Mysteries. This is a great DVD with lots of special features (my favorite, the Reel Big Fish video "Take On Me", but maybe that's just because I like RBF. If you like "South Park" humor or "There's Something About Mary" this is a must own. Otherwise, just rent it. R.I.P. Dale Earnhardt.

Oh yea, I have seen this movie 8 times. It's that good.

Movie Review: Not to compare it to Schindler's List...
Summary: 5 Stars

...but this is a very funny movie. I'm a firm beleiver that a superlative action movie or gross-out comedy is worthy of accolades as much as a superlative drama, and that's why I give BASEketball 5 Stars.

This is not art, be warned. This is not even intelligent humor like some of Christopher Guest's work: this is lowbrow, gross-out, 4-letter word humor. However, this is not Freddy Got Fingered, there is humor here and a lot of it. Celebrity cameos abound, from Bob Costas to Reggie Jackson, although Robert Stack may have the funniest. South Park creators show surprising acting ability and comic timing, although I think their show is brillaitn, so it's not too much of a stretch to preform in a movie like this.

(...) perhaps you should watch the film again and appreciate it for what it is: almost always funny and often hilarious. My 50 year old father was in tears in some sequences, and he's an elitist snob (though I love him.) 9/10

Movie Review: Humor Only a Prepubescent Boy Could Love...
Summary: 5 Stars

Okay, so I'm not a prepubescent boy. I'm a nearly thirty-year-old woman who was made to watch this ridiculous film quite against her will... And, damn it if I nearly peed my pants with laughter!

However, I do not recommend this to anyone who dislikes bathroom humor on principle. Though each joke is well-executed, each corny, melodramatic quip delivered with deliberately dewy-eyed sincerity, it is unapologetically juvenile, raunchy, and pretends to have no amount of redeeming value. But even its lack of values came as a surprise to me, for I can't help but give it more credit than it seems to give itself for having very strong underlying themes of maintaining integrity (believe it or not), and of course, friendship.

Bottom line - if you're looking for good clean fun, this is not for you; but if you're feeling a little off-color, goofy and in the mood for a guilty pleasure, this is a film that, at the least, will make you laugh in spite of yourself.
