Movie Reviews of Away from HerMovie Review: Gentle, Moving Film About Dementia Summary: 5 Stars
I thought this movie was very nice about a husband who is slowly losing his wife to Alzheimer's Disease. It presents the decline of the wife to the point that she needs to go into an assisted living facility as we would call them in the US. The wife slowly declines and finds her own life in the institution as the husband finds some life besides the wife. But they do come together in their own way and in a their new life.
The story is good as is but is missing the worry about finances (the US health system), doctors (everyone seems to be more of a social worker), and the light side of dementia. I know when my father had dementia, he could very be very sweet and funny, utterly charming at times. Other people can get belligerent. Fighting about care is missing too. I remember staff who poorly paid and not always caring. This movie shows the gentle side of dementia - sad, but people aren't worrying about how to pay, the care given and working with social workers who are not very sympathetic. Good movie and I couldn't believe Michael Murphy. It took a second viewing to realize that it was him. Very nicely done.
Movie Review: A story of grace. Summary: 5 Stars
Julie Christie stars in this amazing film about a woman who is afflicted with Alzheimer's disease. Her husband, played to perfection by Gordon Pinsent, must cope with her changes in attitude and the loss of her memory. She insists that he take her to a home to recieve special care. He is asked by the head nurse to leave her for a period of thirty days, so that she may get used to her new surroundings. Upon his return, he finds that she has fallen in love with someone else. He has no choice but to watch it all happen right before his eyes. In the meantime, he tries to find happiness as well.
This film will stay with you long after it is over. It is one of the most poetic films that I have ever seen. Sarah Polley gives one of the most impressive directorial debuts that I have ever seen, and the classical score is haunting. The cinematography is breathtaking as well.
And last but not least, Julie Christie was robbed of an Oscar. Thank God for Lions Gate, who distributed this beautiful film.
Movie Review: Sarah Polley's stunning directorial debut Summary: 5 Stars
Sarah Polley - only 28 and a decade removed from her breakthrough in Atom Egoyan's 'The Sweet Hereafter' - makes a second career breakthrough here with the jawdroppingly polished and accomplished 'Away From Her.' Egoyan is listed as an Executive Producer here. Ms. Polley obviously observed him closely. She's applied those lessons well.
Julie Christie and Gordon Pinsent are both outstanding. Christie - radiant at 66 - is heartbreaking. She's also a living lesson to Hollywood about growing old gracefully and being comfortable with who you are. She's such a pleasant sight instead of these botox/collagen freaks. I also liked Michael Murphy's excellent turn as 'Aubrey.' He doesn't say a word in the film, but what he does do is subtly emotional stuff.
Director Polley also has a wonderful touch with music. Of particular note, she uses Neil Young's 'Harvest Moon' in a way the will do nothing less than send chills up your spine. It's brilliant.

The screenplay by Polley, based on the short story "The Bear Came Over The Mountain" by Alice Munro, is brilliant! The music by Jonathan Goldsmith is excellent! The cinematography by Luc Montpellier is excellent! The film editing by David Wharnsby (Polley's hubsand) is excellent! The casting by John Buchan (Polley's brother) is excellent! Movie Review: A Phenomenal Debut Summary: 5 Stars
Sarah Polley made her debut with the critically acclaimed away from her. A story about a husband who watches his wife slowly lose her memory without him being able to do much of anything.
This is a powerful film. The performances are magical and the direction is as close to perfection as possible. It's a heartbreaking film, without being overly sentimental. I love this film. I think it's one of the best of the year, as well as one of the best of the decade.
Sarah Polley really showed she has something. The performances are perfectly subtle for this suble film. Definitely one of the best of the year.
This DVD edition features a commentary from Julie Christie, a few deleted scenes with Sarah Polley, the first one has commentary, while the others are optional.
Must See.
