Movie Reviews of Avanti!

Movie Review: Simply wonderful
Summary: 5 Stars

My dad and I loved Jack Lemmon to bits. Matter of fact, so much so, that when my dad died back in 1995, I wrote Jack, and told him how many fond memories I had of us, sitting at home, or at the cinema, watching his work. Just a month later, I got a smashing, signed black & white photo, where Jack wished me all the best and thanked me for a lovely letter.

Jack's The Apartment is among my top 5, desert island films. It could just as easily be this one.

Avanti is one of those movies that can only be a Billy Wilder/Jack Lemmon production. Anyone else just wouldn't do. The plot is neither naff, nor ropey, and everyone does a splendid job. The vistas and views of Italy are smashing and spot on, even though the story has that stage feel to it.

As is often the case with Jack Lemmons work, the humour is gut busting at times, without being forced. I can think of no other american actor with such an understaded dry wit as Jack, and that's one of the main reasons I love him. The other reason is easy to spot. He was such a loveable, everyman. Someone you would want as a friend, in part because you want to feel superior to someone, part because you want a friend you feel a need to take care of.

And, aside from anything else, for those of us who love that early 1970's look to movies, this really is a treat. The only other comedy I can think of that works as well as this, from the same period is Woody Allen's Play it again Sam.

I can only suggest that anyone who reads this treat themselves to this great gem!

Movie Review: Sleeper romantic comedy: Lemmon and Mills make this classic
Summary: 5 Stars

With "Senza Fina" as the musical theme we've got a top rate romantic comedy in "Avanti!" Jack Lemmon arrives in Italy to get his father's corpse back to the US in time for the funeral to be viewed by 200,000 people on closed circuit TV (black and white in Puerto Rico). The jokes reference the time (1972) as the pilot in flight tells a State Department guy, "Greece is on the far left" "Not while I'm in the State Department". And Jack Lemmon's earily relevant gripe: "Goddamn Ralph Nader".

But what really makes this film is Juliet Mills who just came off the show, "Nanny and the Professor" and proves herself here as the weight-conscious lass who wins Lemmon's heart...and ours. It seems her mother and Lemmon's father had a 10 year affair at the hotel whose manager played by Clive Revill takes care of all the arrangements (What would Lemmon do without him). Meanwhile the porter is trying to blackmail Lemmon with compromising photos. Lemmon can no longer resist Mills charm.
"Permesso?" "Avanti!" 5 stars.

Movie Review: un' ora sola ti vorrei...
Summary: 5 Stars

that is the song, the leitmotiv... it looks like a so simple story
but in fact, it seems like there were so many films in only one!! what were really our parents??? what were the secrets they couldn't share with the other ones even children? and above all: how they finally manage, beyond the death, to learn us the way of life, the way of love and happiness! of course, the two actors : Lemmon and Mils are absolutely fabulous! on my opinion, one of the most marvellous film of Billy Wilder... unfortunately too unknown! and, as for those who really love the Jack Lemmon's Art, an essentiel film!!
the telephone conversations with his wife!!... how to describe them??? it's amazing!! the scene in the morgue... a sort of masterpiece! all the others characters are extraordinary painted too! So... do me a favour! forgive my very very bad english but rush at " AVANTI" as soon as possible!!

Movie Review: My favorite Wilder film, by far.
Summary: 5 Stars

Others have said it, but I'll say it again,"I can't believe this film isn't better known." I consider myself a film buff, but I'd never heard of this film until I came across it searching for Jack Lemon movies. When I noticed that Juliet Mills costarred and read the positive reviews I had to buy it, and I'm glad I did. I've owned the movie for a month and I've watched it three times. It's surprising, not only, how quickly 140 minutes goes by, but also that, at the end of the film, I wish it would last longer. Of course, you have to like this type of film. It's a character driven piece, and that's where its humor comes from, the various eccentricities, physicalities and foibles of its characters, not from slapstick and one-liners. If you enjoy a movie like "When Harry Met Sally", you'll probably enjoy this film.

Movie Review: Feel good movie
Summary: 5 Stars

I find this gem to be simply delightful, excellent acting and great location scenery.
Here's some sampling of the humor.

A 90 year old gentleman is having his annual romp with his young nurses at the hotel. A while later a stretcher was brought to his room due to a heart attack.
Jack Lemmon: " Hope he's all right "
Hotel manager: " He's fine, it's one of the nurses. "

Hotel manager: " I have some good news and bad news, your licenses had been rejected, you will be delayed for 5 days, your wife is very angry...."
Jack Lemmon: " Stop, now tell me the good news."
Hotel manager: " That was the good news. "

OK, so I'm not a comedian. But you gotta see it. Jack Lemmon and the hotel manager is very funny and Juliet Mills is a total sweetheart.
