Movie Reviews of Auntie MameMovie Review: Like fine wine, Auntie Mame ages well Summary: 5 Stars
I must have seen this movie about a hundred times, and it just gets better and better. This is, by any measure, an uproariously funny film. You find yourself rooting for her and her unconventional approach to raising Patrick, even though you know deep in your heart that you'd be mortified to expose your own children to the kinds of things she exposes him to. The finale is a comedic treasure ("Is everyone lit?") that I can watch again and again. But I think the best part is the unrestrained joie de vive that bursts from the character of Mame, so skillfully played by Rosalind Russell. I still find it criminal that this movie is not better-known to more modern audiences.
Movie Review: This is the best version of the book Summary: 5 Stars
I wonder how people can say that the Lucille Ball version is better- perhaps they simply haven't read the book to compare.
This version, while toned down slightly as has been previously mentioned, is much closer to the spirit of what is a fabulously light-hearted, witty satire of American life at the time. Rosalind Russell is Mame, with all her glamor, bravery and spirit.
The only reason to watch the Lucille Ball version is to snicker at how much soft focus they used to disguise the fact Lucy was far too old for the role, and possibly for masochists who want to hear incredibly treacly song numbers that don't seem to belong.
Movie Review: Live! Live! Live! Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of my all-time favorite movies and a far superior movie to its musical counterpart MAME with Lucille Ball. It's a great movie for anyone who likes to veer off the mainstream. Rosalind Russell is wonderful as Auntie Mame who is always living life to the fullest no matter what difficult circumstances she may find herself in. That she is able to pass this positive attitude on to her nephew and her secretary is her great acheivement. This funny, touching movie is one I can and have watched over and over when I'm feeling a little down in order to lift my spirits.
Movie Review: Life changing Summary: 5 Stars
Auntie Mame on DVD how exciting. I saw this film for the first time when I was seven and it has grown to influnace my entire life. The original version (not the remake with Lucy Ball) is the ultimate in fifties ciniema. Bigger then life charecters, beautiful sets and customs and Rosalind Russell in one of her best preformances. The message of living life to it's fullest has inspired me the way "It's A Wonderful Life" has touched many. If I ever feel down I put in my old video copy and it cheers me up. Now I can have it on DVD. I hope that it will have a bunch of extra features.
Movie Review: Auntie Mame (Rosalind Russell) Summary: 5 Stars
By far my favorite movie of all time. The first time I saw it, it was a rainy afternoon, and I was expecting another "boring old black and white" movie, but within 3 minutes I was hooked - laughing, and crying throughout the entire film. An oldie but goodie for all ages, about an eccentric, sassy, bohemian aunt who finds herself in playing the role of guardian to her dead brother's son, Patrick. Hilarious and touching, I cannot imagine anybody not liking this film. ... In Mame's memorable words, "Life is a banquet, and most poor suckers are starving to death .... LIVE!"
