Movie Reviews of Auntie MameMovie Review: Colorful and timeless Summary: 5 Stars
Even though "Auntie Mame" was released almost fifty years ago, it remains amazingly timeless, shot in such vivid color on gorgeous sets that it never comes across as outdated. The production is clearly based on the stage play, and the scenes are filmed as such (yes, it's episodic). Even though most know the story of Mame, it's hard not to get engrossed into her adventures when Rosalind Russell is tackling this signature role. She embodies the spirit and fun of Mame, while the wonderful Peggy Cass is perfect as the mousy, sensitive Agnes Gooch. The script is thoroughly predictable, but filled with terrific zingers. Watching this DVD made me realize what a shame it was that 1974's "Mame" starred the usually fantastic Lucille Ball, as her croaking and vanity ruined what should have been an equally addictive musical version of this story.
Movie Review: Rosalind Russell Rocks!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm so glad this comedy classic is on dvd. This is one of my favorite comedys of all time. Rosalind Russell is superb as Mame, the eccentric aunt that young orpan, Patrick, is sent to live with. Mame, he soon finds, lives life to its fullest and he grows up in her world of interesting people and trips to exotic places. Peggy Cass is a riot as Agnes Gooch, Mame's secretary and Corale Brown is hilarious as Mame's best friend, Vera, a boozing actress and competitive friend. The story follows Patrick from childhood to his adulthood and shows his Auntie Mame's influence during his life. She gets into a ton of comical situations---there are enough laughs in this film to please even the most critcal cynic. Wanna a fun night with friends? Get this dvd. A great addition to your comedy collection.
Movie Review: Auntie Mame (Rosalind Russell, not Lucille Ball) Summary: 5 Stars
This role was made for Rosalind Russell! While always a fan of Lucille Bsll's wrk, this non-musical Rosalilnd Russell version is unbeatable. She inspires in every way, including individuality, laughter, and openeess to the world around us. This version also included an amazing supporting cast, including: the incomparable Peggy Cass (as Agnes Gooch; a young Larry Hagmen, Billie Burke, Forrest Tucker and everyone else around Mame/ Even as a child ( who had my own personal Auntie Mame in my life), I was inspired to "Live!live! Live!"
Thank yu me for showing me, even as a child), that "life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death". It inspired me and still does...in sptie of what anyone thinks. Thanks Patrick and Mame Dennis! If you've nto seen this you are missing out!
Movie Review: Rosalind Russell as "Auntie Mame" Summary: 5 Stars
This is the original, the one and only Mame that matters. I love this movie; it is absolutely my favorite of all-time. It's funny as all get out, touching, and has a message. Who needs the musical numbers to interrupt the flow? I see no reason at all to bother with the Lucille Ball version, especially when you can spend a couple of hours with Rosalind Russell (who should have won an Academy Award, but lost to Susan Hayward in "I Want To Live"; who remembers that movie?) and have far more fun. Get ready to laugh yourself silly. This is it, dear people; the funniest, most delightful film you could possibly indulge in. So what are you reading this for? Get a copy of "Auntie Mame" starring Rosalind Russell and you'll be in love for life.
Movie Review: I love old movies Summary: 5 Stars
I probably saw this movie on TV. As they do now there were Saturday afternoon movies and late night movies after the news. I have only manage to see the movie twice. But it is was so good and entertaining, it stands out clearly in my mind from Auntie Mame sweeping down the stairs to her make-over of Gladys to her weaving her spelling once again over her grand nephew. I loved the movie and found it so interesting I had to read the book when the credits stated in was based on a novel. Sorry but I have never seen a movie better than the book. The novel is wonderful. This movie realy captured its essence. I was not disappointed with the transition from novel to movie. I can't recommend this movie enough.
