Movie Reviews of Auntie MameMovie Review: A 5 Star Comedy: Wit and the incomparable Rosalind Russell Summary: 5 Stars
"Auntie Mame" is a classic comedy that still gets me rolling whenever I revisit it. This film was a favorite of my mother who introduced it to my sisters and me at a very young age. The comedy is incredibly dense and subtle-I certainly understand more and more of the film the older I get. It truly, as other reviewers have commented, puts many modern comedies to shame. One just doesn't find very many dialogue-driven comedies these days. This film succeeds through its rich character development of every character in the film. Even the minor parts are fully fleshed out and receive immaculate detail. The entire cast shines in this film, but Rosalind Russell's performance shines above everyone. This film is worth watching for her performance alone in the opening scene. Her character has the potential to explode over the top, but Russell reins the part beautifully and manages to create an incredibly dynamic character. With quick dialogue, intellectual comedy, low-brow humor delivered with wonderful sensitivity and subtlety, this film promises to reward all those who watch it for years to come.
Movie Review: Great movie, great transfer, too bad there's no DVD extras Summary: 5 Stars
I just finished Richard Tyler Jordan's delightful, illuminating and photo-filled new (2004) paperback original, BUT DARLING, I'M YOUR AUNTIE MAME: THE AMAZING HISTORY OF THE WORLD'S FAVORITE MADCAP AUNT and I learned so much about how the Auntie Mame character was created by Patrick Dennis (a.k.a. Edward Tanner) and how she evolved from the novel to a Broadway play, smash hit movie with Rosalind Russell, Tony Award-winning Broadway musical starring Angela Lansbury and finally a movie musical starring Lucille Ball. That book sent me back to the original motion picture and what a joy it is to see in widescreen and with such a crisp picture quality. My only complaint is that Warner Brothers was pretty skimpy on the extras--besides a trailer, the only other extra is the ability to play the entiure movie without dialogue and sound effects, but just listen to the music. Um, yeah....that will be something everyone will want to do. A commentary track by MAME historian Richard Tyler Jordan or Patrick Dennis biographer (UNCLE MAME) Eric Myers would have been great fun!
Movie Review: "It was right after yogurt time..." Summary: 5 Stars
You know when sometimes life seems like nothing but a tremendous burden and you can't see anything but black clouds looming over your head? Well, consult a therapist -- and then get this movie and watch it. Really, this film is one of the few unequivocally delightful objects floating around in this world of pain. Butterflies, puppies, ice cream, and "Auntie Mame." It's sweet without being at all syrupy -- in fact it's wit can be suprisingly tart, and even a little salty, for the 50's. It was based on the comic reminiscences of Patrick Dennis and his crazy childhood with his wacky unabashedly Bohemian aunt. Rosalind Russell as the free-spirited Mame is sublime. And it's central theme is forever relevant: "Family Values" are not always what the Republican so-called "conservatives" say they are. Don't be a "stuck-up Babbitt-y little snob." And don't marry a vain, empty-headed bigot of a debutante just because she's hot. "And she STEPPED on the BALL! It was GHASTLY, really... it was just GHASTLY!" Really, just watch it, and you'll get it.
Movie Review: "Life is a banquet!" Summary: 5 Stars
I absolutely LOVE this movie! "Auntie Mame" has to be one of the best films I have ever watched! Rosalind Russell is excellent as the eccentric Mame Dennis. The story follows Patrick Dennis, who, after his father passes away, is placed in the custody of his not-so-conservative aunt. Mame exposes Patrick to ALL of splendors of life, most of which his father wanted to keep him far, far away from. However, Mame always showed her incredible adoration for her "little love," and made sure that he didn't grow up to be a stuffy, conservative, bigot (much like his father).Although I have seen the version of this film with Lucille Ball starring as the title character, I have to say that Rosalind Russell is THE Mame Dennis! Lucille Ball was very good, but I think this version is much, much better! If you want to be thoroughly entertained, buy and watch this movie! I would also check reading the book of the same name by Patrick Dennis. It will keep you laughing the whole time!
Movie Review: "Life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to..." Summary: 5 Stars
"Life is a banquet," says Mame, "and most poor suckers are starving to death." My favorite movie of all time is finally being released on DVD. Hurray! From start to finish, this lavish depiction of Patrick Dennis and his flambouyant Auntie Mame is a marvel. This movie is full of colorful antics and hilarious scenarios which could only be pulled off by the late and great Rosalind Russell. Young Patrick Dennis goes to live with his 'odd but loving' Aunt after his father dies and he is left with no other surviving relative. He is also in for the time of his life. Mixed into the fold are his Aunt's best friend Vera Charles and Lyndsey Wolsey, along with a protective maid Nora and houseboy Ito. This movie is funny, sad and uplifting but never boring or predictable. It shows us all that a family is not always a mother and father but built on love from all who are around us. A great movie! I will definetly buy this one for my DVD collection to cherish forever.
