Movie Reviews of Auntie MameMovie Review: One of the best that isn't on those Top 100 lists Summary: 5 Stars
This is the one and only version of Auntie Mame that anyone should ever see. Rosalind Russell is brilliant as the eccentrically loving Mame who takes in nephew Patrick and includes him in her madcap life. Having been charmed by the original release of the film back in the '50s, I had the great pleasure of introducing my (now-adult daughter) to Mame--thereby bringing another generation forward to share the pleasure of the production.Dealing as it does with the highs and lows of Mame's fortunes, her loves and losses and, always, her devotion to Patrick, there is great comedy, genuine sentiment and some wonderful social comment as well. While Russell always turned in fine performances (The Women, most notably), she put subsequent wannabe efforts to shame. The Lucille Ball version (in which she looks as if she was shot through Vaseline-covered cheesecloth) is lamentably bad, going for cheap laughs. But there is nothing cheap about this, the original. From Mame's efforts to be a salesgirl at Macy's during the Christmas season, to her gentle put-down of an anti-semite, Russell is glorious as Mame--big-hearted, big-humored, and wonderfully off-center. And good performances are given across the board by co-cast members Peggy Cass, Coral Browne, Forrest Tucker, and Connie Gilchrist and Yuki Shimoda as Russell's faithful staff. Get this and share it with special friends and family. It is truly one of the all-time great movies. My highest recommendation.
Movie Review: So Top Drawer! Summary: 5 Stars
This is Rosalind Russell's masterpiece! The tale of Auntie Mame and her adventures is for everyone. Due to circumstances beyond all control, Mame is greeted one fine morning with the sight of her young nephew Patrick and his conservator. It seems that poor Patrick has no other relatives left but dear Mame to look after him. After the fog from the night before (due to one of Mame's legendary parties), Mame is at once overcome with emotion at the thought of being responsible for another human, other than making sure her high-society theatre pals get to bed after a night of a tad too many cocktails! We see Patrick and Mame grow up before our eyes over the years. We see the financial bad times, and the oh so high times. We witness the happiness which Mame finally finds with her husband Beau, only to meet his end tragically in the Swiss Alps. We then see Patrick find love, or so he thinks, and live through those "Upson Downs". Then there is Mame's book, aptly titled "Live, Live, Live!". Throughout all of this are countless scenes of Rosalind delivering her remarkable wit through this character. The dialogue is hilarious, the costumes audacious and the sets themselves...astonishing (as Mame's life transitions, so does her hair and her sprawling New York apartment decor). The entire cast was exceptional, perfect fit!!! There is so much more to this film, so do yourself a favor darling, get it, pop it in and prepare to Live! Live! Live!
Movie Review: A Movie You're Sure To Come Back To Again And Again Summary: 5 Stars
I saw Auntie Mame for the first time about ten years ago. At that time I had an office just a few short blocks from Beekman Place, the fictious address of Auntie Mame. If you've ever had the opportunity to stoll along the narrow streets of this exclusive enclave, you know just how charming a venue it can be. I used to imagine how lovely it would be to experience one of Mame's enchanting cocktail partys. There's no telling who might show up. You could per chance meet a Duke, a Countess, a Judge, a juggler, a yogi, a Hollywood film director, a writer, a Wall Street tycoon, a lawyer, a surgeron, a diplomat, a Maha Rahja, or the mayor of New York City. Life at Auntie Mames' was like...Well you know what Forest Gump's mama would say "life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you'll get".Here's a film that is absolutely gaurnteed to provide you with your moneys worth of escapist entertainment. This is your perfect rainy day, wipe away the blues, life is for the taking, Hollywood feel-good movie. Auntie Mame simply gets better and better with each viewing. You don't believe me? Just take a walk down Beekman Place. Stroll along the park, that looks over the East River and look up into one of those georgous town-houses. There's a party going on and you're invited. Pull up a chair and let me introduce you to Mame Dennis. I think you're going to enjoy yourself. In fact I know you're going to want to come back again and again.
Movie Review: Auntie Mame Rocks!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Rosalind Russell plays the auntie every wishes was their own auntie. From the days where Mame hosts wild paries to the arrival of her nephew Patrick who's presence make Mame become more maternal. The battle's Mame faces with Patrick's trustee, the irritation between Mame and her best friend, actress Vera Charles, the short lived attemps at work, her attempts at horse riding and the way she helps Patrick see how his girlfriend is out of his league are great comedy touches. Rosalind Russell jumped at the chance of being offered the role of Auntie Mame as both share the same life philosophy "Live Live Live" and "Life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death". This is a great movie and though Mame matures throughout the film she still remains the same eccentric lovable Auntie Mame. Whilst Patrick Dennis is Auntie Mam'es nephew, he isn't the same Patrick Dennis who write the book as the writers real name was Edward Everett Tanner III. Rosalind Russell also did the Broadway show of Auntie Mame until she decided to call it a day due to other work commitments when Angela Lansbury took over the role of Mame. This is a great DVD and includes the original trailers for this version of Auntie Mame and the 1974 version with Lucille Ball. A must have DVD but be warned it is very addictive as once closing credits have finished you just wanna see it all again - well it works that way for me. hehe :-)
Movie Review: And what's WRONG with Puriel Puce? Summary: 5 Stars
I was sixteen the first time I found myself under the spell of this movie. Evertytime that it is on TV I drop what I am doing and surrender to it and to Rosiland Russell who slips into Mame Dennis Burnside so effortessly that the room around me goes dark leaving her performance as my spotlight of attention. Fortuntaly, the rest of the cast shines as brightly as she does making the plot move along way to fast, and leaving the viewer to feel as if the magical moment has passed to quickly.Writing a review of this movie is impossible; the cast, crew and production speaks for itself. Hollywood could never remake this film without throwing in its obligatory obscenity, uninspired casting and vapid camerawork. Think about it, who could afford the type of talent needed today to bankroll such a quality supporting cast -- you just can't go out and duplicate Gloria Upson (and her shining moment in the cinema fermement when she asked the second most important line in the history of stage and film: "And whats WRONG with Muriel Puce?") with some bit part when it was done to perfection in this film. Hollywood knows this - with the exception of the horrific "MAME" (Lucille Ball bludgeoned the role to death with her Camel rasped pleas of "PATRICK!!!") this story has been hands off -- good for us who love it!
