Movie Review: "LIVE! LIVE! LIVE!" AUNTIE MAME DOES A LOT OF IT!

Rosalind Russell reprises her role as the fun loving, energetic Mame Dennis from her Broadway stage show hit to the big screen in Warner Brothers' "Auntie Mame," and what a performance! Mame Dennis is an eccentric socialite who is having the time of her life (and telling everyone to "Live! Live! Live!") during the roaring `20's and is not at all put out when after her brother's death, his only child, Patrick (Jan Handzlik), is brought to live with her. Filled with colorful characters, (I especially love Mame's butler, Ito (Yuki Shimoda), who giggles throughout the movie) and we're treated to some really clever comical dialogue, (such as: Mame saying, "Life's a banquet and most suckers are starving to death!") great set designs as Mame's penthouse apartment is transformed from Oriental, Colonial, Greek, Modern, and finally an inspired India design.
The love between young Patrick and his beloved Auntie Mame grows throughout the picture as they share the ups and downs of life (including the depression era's bust). This love is put to a test of sorts as Patrick (now in his early twenties and played by Roger Smith) has found his true love in society debutante Gloria Upson (Joanna Barnes "The Parent Trap" (1961). For Patrick feels Gloria and her snobbish parents will find offense in his Auntie Mame's eccentric lifestyle and extraordinary friends. Viewers of this very entertaining film will thrill to see Mame, being the smart cookie that she is, pulling out all the stops as she sends the snobbish Upsons fleeing from a very comical dinner party!
"Auntie Mame" is filled with all the wonderful things that make classic comedies so enjoyable. The dvd transfer is clear and the Technicolor is brilliant. The sound is clear and crisp, with little to no audio static. The original theatrical trailer is included here too. Fans of "Auntie Mame" will also want to see Lucille Ball in the musical version of the hit Broadway play, "Mame" (1974) which is sadly not yet available on dvd. I also recommend the 1920's era "Thoroughly Modern Millie" with Julie Andrews, Mary Tyler Moore, and Carol Channing (Raspberries!!) which is available on dvd and should not be missed! "Auntie Mame" has always been one of my favorite films and I'm very pleased to have it in my dvd collection, so add it to yours and Live! Live! Live!
