Movie Reviews of Assassination TangoMovie Review: good for the tango sequences Summary: 2 Stars
As much as I like Robert Duvall, I'm afraid I must agree with the other reviewers who say that this movie was obviously an indulgence on his part. As director, co-writer, and main character, if he wanted to present his admiration of the tango dance form, he should have concentrated solely on that. Perhaps Duvall set up the assassination story-line to attract a wider audience to the film and thus to the dance. Perhaps he was trying to imply that the main character was dancing his own improvisational "tango" as he attempted to complete his hit on his target in Buenos Aires. But no matter--it didn't work. As just one point of criticism, several sections of dialogue meandered on for so long, they became incredible distractions. However, some of the tango scenes were beautiful. Especially notable is the couple dancing during the final credits. I watched the entire movie all the way through only once--and once was enough--but I've replayed this final dance sequence many times. For me, it alone is worth the price of the film.
Movie Review: Duvall Making a Fool of Himself Summary: 2 Stars
This movie had so much potential. It was a neat concept to contrast the tango (a dance of love and hate, good and evil) with the personality of a hitman. The movie fails, however, because of Duvall and Luciana Pedraza (his real life girlfriend). Duvall, who wrote the script and directed, attempted to come off as likeable, but instead gave off the impression of a condescending jerk. The way he kept repeating "mucho gusto, mucho gusto" made me wanna smack him upside the head. His girlfriend is even worse. Not only is she a terrible actress in this flop, but she doesn't even have the right accent. Normally, I don't mind, but when the rest of the actors do have the accent (either naturally or put on), and one of them who should have the accent doesn't, the movie loses credibility. I may be knit-picking, but I can't deny it; it detracted from the movie. Yes, the music was good, and there were some decent dance scenes, and the charcters were semi-interesting, but overall, this one just missed the mark.
Movie Review: Waste of time Summary: 2 Stars
This movie is a waste of time and money. The story is boring, the acting is lousy, the music is weak, and the dancing is in very short clips and is mediocre at best. There are a few nice scenes of the city - Buenos Aires that is - not Brooklyn. But that's about it. Clearly, Duvall wanted to make a movie about his passion - argentine tango. But he had no story. Apparently he worked on this script for many years. Maybe he should have stopped long time ago.
Movie Review: just didnt go anywhere Summary: 2 Stars
The movie wasn't about Tango so much, it wasn't about the mob so much. It just didn't really go anywhere. It could of been a contender, but sadly it wasn't.
Movie Review: An exercise in weak connections Summary: 1 Stars
Robert Duvall could very well be the same character he played in The Apostle as he represents in Assassination Tango. He has the same impatient fervor, passionate obsessions, and bowlegged swashbuckling strut. Rather than get into a new character method, Duvall plays himself again with a new hobby - tango. And how to make a movie about tango interesting? Complement it with an "International Man of Murder Mystery". Duvall is a fine actor, and I do appreciate him. However, this movie bored me to tears. The tango dancing is exquisite. The indigineous Argentinians are charismatic, beautiful dancers and a joy to watch. By the end of the film it feels like a geriatric tour-de-force -- trying to hold onto youth by obsessing over a hot young tango dancer... and a 10 year-old daughter back home. I develop an interest in taking tango lessons and a nostalgia for Duvall's excellent opus, The Apostle....
