Movie Reviews of Assassination Tango

Movie Review: An interesting and eccentric movie
Summary: 4 Stars

I am a fan of Robert Duvall, who often likes to play interesting and isolated characters who have an inward struggle inside. In this movie, Duvall plays an aging hitman who is sent by his crime boss to assassinate a wealthy general in Argentina. When the general gets hospitalized, Duvall's character has to bide his time for two weeks. He gets enthralled by the tango, especially an attractive tango dancer whom he strikes a friendship with and occupies his time learning the tango, while waiting for the opportunity to complete his assignment. I will leave you to watch the rest of the movie for the ending.

What I liked about the movie is that it offers a very original story, coupling a hitman with tango dancing(!). The story seems to talk about a man's inward struggle about himself, his relationships, and his future. What attracts him to the tango is that it offers a disciplined and beautiful structure which his own life is lacking. The movie also has some beautiful little moments, giving us glimpses into this man's relationship with his girlfriend and her daughter whom he adores, and later his relationship with the tango dancer.

This movie, however, is not as action-packed as one would expect and it is fairly predictable. However, the tango dancing is great and the dancers are very attractive. I would say, don't expect too much watching this movie. If you enjoy an original story and drama which focusses on character development, you'd probably like this one. If you are looking for an action-packed movie, you'd be disappointed.

Movie Review: A major actor's ego trip that could be worth viewing
Summary: 4 Stars

Robert Duvall is among the greatest film actors of the last forty years. He fills the screen and it is virtually impossible for any other actor to upstage him. This films reminds me of the time when Richard Burton read off the names in a phone book---and the audience was held spellbound by the late thespians ability to make such a normally boring event seem wildly interesting. Assassination Tango lacks coherence and is something of a rambling mess. And yet, I found the experience highly rewarding.

Duvall is a director of modest talent. The movie is supposedly about a overage professional killer who must travel to Argentina to assassinate a retired general who is allegedly guilty of crimes against humanity. None of this ever makes any logical sense. But the dancing and the beautiful cinematography are exhilarating. Duvall has the extraordinary talent to turn meandering dialogues into riveting scenes. We are entranced by his characters adoration of the girlfriends daughter. The flirtations between John J. Anderson (Duvall) and the gorgeous and significantly younger tango instructor Manuella (Luciana Pedraza) are poignant and even a bit touching. Assassination Tango is definitely not for everyone. I give it four stars, and recommend it only to those who believe that great acting alone can salvage a less than well put together script. In many respects Assassination Tango is nothing more than Robert Duvalls grandiose ego trip. Nonetheless, it still might be well worth an evening of your time.

Movie Review: Robert Duvall and the Tango - A Great Mix
Summary: 4 Stars

I have loved Robert Duvall since I saw him in Tender Mercies with Tess Harper. His movies are excellent character studies of a person with a wonderful warm side and then there is that other side which may not be quite as admirable. The Apolstle is another example. I agree that the story line in Assassination Tango is a little weak and I personally was not all that interested in the dark side of his life although I understand the reason for showing his contrasting personalities. But his love of his girlfriend's daughter was just wonderful, and his relationship with a beautiful and talented Luciana Pedraza was just entrancing. I thought these relationships just flowed along very naturally and had no "Hollywood fakeness" about them. I am a fan of films done in other countries where naturalness is admired and consequently are more believable. And, the tango! I have always thought the waltz and tango were the most beautiful dances to watch. The tango flowed throughout the film whether someone learning the tango, professionals dancing the tango, just ordinary people dancing the tango, or Robert Duvall learning the tango - pulled it all together.
I would definitely watch this movie again and at some point will buy it.

Movie Review: Looking for info on some music from this movie.
Summary: 4 Stars

Hi people!
I liked this movie, but more as "pinceladas", brushstrokes of buenos aires and tango, rather than as a movie itself. I enjoyed plenty the dialogues but I see it as a documentary, and I do not worry about the plot.

I actually wanted to leave this review to see if someone can help me figure out what is the choral piece, with children voices that comes when he goes to the elementary school looking for her, where she is shooting a commercial.

I am DYING to understand what it is. I am from Argentina and I cannot recognize what they are saying, but I think it is Latin, I think they are saying "ora pro nobis" (pray for us) is part of the MASS, but I don't remember which one!
I read over and over the music list at the end of the credits and I do not think is there!

PLEASE HELP! I am HAUNTED by it!
Thanks!

Movie Review: Mr. Duvall's Passion for the Tango
Summary: 4 Stars

I ordered a used copy of Assassination Tango and found it to be in excellent condition. Amazon does a great job of getting any purchase to you as soon as possible. I bought the movie for Robert Duvall's dancing and the only disappointment for me was he didn't dance enough. The character Mr. Duvall playes in this movie is very complex. The subject of this movie is a bit "dark" but it is still worth a view to watch the talented Robert Duvall.
